When people say 'it all happened so fast', they were right. It would be the perfect way to describe everything that just happened. Ruby barely had a chance to gasp when Sam pulled her behind him, shoving her towards his brother. Gunshots went off, barely audible over the pounding in her ears from how loud the heartbeats were. Then she was shoved behind Dean as he stepped forward, more gunshots.
Dean shouted his brother's name and Ruby's blood froze in her veins. Sam. Sam took the bullets for her. The tears flooded her eyes as she hurried around to kneel beside Dean and Sam. The smell of blood, warm and coppery filled the air, burning its way into her nostrils. "Oh god, Sam." Ruby's hands searched his chest, feeling for a wet spot. Her stomach twisted as she found one and she pressed her palms, one atop the other, to the wound.
"We need to get him out of here, Dean. We can't take care of him in here," Ruby insisted, looking to the older brother.
Why was she so useless twenty-seven days out of the month? Her wolfstime had finished just as the army was streaming out of the underground. And there was no way she could have found herself in time to be of any use to the city.
