Second bullet in her best guy's gun - Video dark though “There's not gonna be a safe landing, but I can try and force it down.” His voice sounded tensed, determined and so achingly far away, Peggy gripped the console before her and tried to calm herself. “I'll-I'll get Howard on the line. He'll know what to do.” Don’t do this, please. “There's not enough time. This thing's moving too fast and it's heading for New York. I gotta put her in the water.”
There was no hesitation in it, he spoke with conviction and calm. “Please don't do this. W-we have time. We can work it out.” She could find other ways, there had to be other ways. It couldn’t end like this! Not now, not after they had only just found each other.
“Right now I'm in the middle of nowhere. If I wait any longer a lot of people are gonna die.”
He paused; she felt heart sick at this, hearing him through the tinny reception of the radio, not being able to be there, to do more.
“Peggy, this is my choice.”
Her words turned against her, exactly what she had said about Barnes and for her to speak against them now negated all of it. All she could do was nod and try to hold back the tears already welling in her eyes.
“Peggy...”
She hadn’t spoken, and now she looked up, red rimmed eyes and her mouth suddenly dry. “I'm here.” She said, barely more than able to whisper it.
“I'm gonna need a rain check on that dance.”
He was being brave, trying to make it sound as if this would all be just a temporary setback, what choice did she have but to respond in kind? “All right. A week next Saturday at The Stork Club.” She tried to smile but her lips refused the gesture.
“You've got it.”
“Eight o'clock on the dot. Don't you dare be late. Understood?” Trying to force a bit of the Peggy Carter he’d first met into her voice, trying to be strong, to let him know she would be ok…but she wouldn’t. She already knew that.
“You know, I still don't know how to dance.”
The statement seemed absurd in the middle of all this, almost comical. “I'll show you how.” I’ll show you everything, and we will have all the time in the world. “ Just be there.”
“We'll have the band play something slow.”
A pause, she nodded again, no longer fighting tears, they began to slide from her eyes as pain welled inside her.
“I'd hate to step on your...”
Silence…static…nothing. “Steve? Steve?” She shook her head, unable to believe this was it, this was the end, and somehow it could not be. It was just a lost transmission or faulty equipment and he would call back to her and tell her it was a rough landing but he was alright. Please… Dear God Steve please be alright. -----------------------------------
Steve…STEVE! [She woke screaming his name, her face damp with tears and her throat choked. She hadn’t had that dream.. that nightmare in months. It was every bit as powerful now as ever. She would not be sleeping the rest of the night.]
