It's several hours later when the debris is still being searched that Dean comes across a hole leading down into a tunnel. It takes him some work, but he gets down there, blood and dirt coating his skin and clothes. He's got several scrapes and countless bruises from helping out all day, and honestly he wonders why any of them bother anymore, why anyone even cares enough when Mandalus constantly takes their happiness and crushes it, but he's a good man and won't give up the search because he's tired and sore.
Reaching for the flashlight at his hip, Dean clicks it on and is hit with the sight of Ruby dead on the ground. His stomach turns and he looks away, rubbing his hand over his mouth. Closing his eyes for a moment, he takes a deep breath in through his nose, eyes stinging a bit. He doesn't want to cry, but god damn the tears are close.
Approaching her, he presses fingertips against her neck, even though just feeling her cold skin is enough proof she's dead. His hand rests against the side of her neck and he curls his thumb under her chin, tilting her head up. "What did I tell you, Red?" He almost expected an answer. "I told you not to do this."
Dean sighs heavily, finally just scooping her up and over his shoulder, holding onto her legs and one wrist as he climbs back out of the tunnel. Carefully setting her down, resting her against his lap, Dean pulls out his phone and calls Sam.
