Marie watched the younger girl approach the see-through glass doors of Matilda's Ice Cream Parlour. She seemed determined, if not a little reluctant at the same time. The tinkling of the door didn't startle her like it sometimes did because she was prepared for it this time. She put on the smile she reserved for all of their customers and stood up straight. "Afternoon to you." Marie returned the greeting. Her name tag was on her uniform, on the pocket opposite the embroidered ice cream cone.
The girl, dryad if Marie was correct, seemed to get lost in the menu and Marie turned to look up at it. There really was a wealth of items there and it could get overwhelming. She gave her a bemused smile as she turned back to her. "Well, my favorite is the small caramel sundae. The caramel is homemade and we sprinkle it with toasted almonds. Usually it comes over vanilla, but chocolate ice cream is good too, just a little more rich."
"If that doesn't interest you, we have the baby banana split. It's like a regular banana split, just with smaller scoops and only half a banana. Or there's the chocolate sundae with peanut butter sauce. That one is a local favorite." She had just offered a really sweet dish, a fruity dish and a savory dish. There should be one that appealed to the younger girl. If not, well Marie could suggest several more.
