The tiny drops that collected atop her toes and on her jeans weren't enough to force a change. She still had two legs, two feet and ten perfectly painted toes. It wouldn't be all that great if she'd wound up with a tail in the middle of the school's lawn. She'd have to flop like a fish out of water back inside and wait until she'd dried to bring those curved legs back. And that would waste just way too much time. It's not that she really had anything planned, but knowing that she'd have to wait to do whatever it may be that could come up for her to do was just a thought she didn't care for in the least.
There had been a time when she had been in grade school. It had been sixth grade. Young love was something she'd only thought she knew about when she had first started dating Kenneth Hillside. He was tall, dark and handsome, the perfect combination of all man and one hundred percent sex appeal. Even at that age. They'd flirted and passed notes to each other. He'd asked her to the dance in that cocky, cowboyish 'I already know you'll say yes but I'm just following protocol by asking' way. Raina had been ecstatic.
She talked about nothing else for days, weeks, before the dance. Hours were spent in the store trying to find the perfect dress. And when that special night came, she stepped out in this beautiful blue and green dress that looked just like the south seas in the afternoon when the sun was high up in the sky. But apparently it had only been a cruel joke. He'd known she'd been different. Having pink hair was kind of a clue to that. Once he had her at the dance, they'd soaked her with a bucket of water. Her legs had been soaked and she'd fallen to the ground amidst the gasps and cries of horror as she laid there with a tail in front of them.
Her parents had taken her out of that school and started her in special schools for people like her. She'd had to pull herself out of the gymnasium back then and she'd never wanted to do something like that again, something so humiliating.
But that was a long, long time ago. Running her hands along the moist blades of grass, she laughed to herself and was perfectly content until she'd moved to the side just a few inches and realized that she hadn't been alone. Raina sat up and looked at the blond girl sitting on the bench. She had a very pretty halo of gold surrounding her and a very pretty smile. "I didn't know I had company." Raina said as she hopped up and walked over towards the bench and the girl there. "Hi, I'm Raina." Instead of the typical handshake someone would give, she (being overly friendly, and very pulled into this simple beauty the girl had) leaned in and gave her a tight hug. That's when she realized what she was, and she jumped a little with excitement. "You're human, aren't you? That is so cool. I totally love humans. What's your name?"
