He gave her a boyish grin. “I guess we're both in the business of saving things. You're saving the earth and I'm saving the little critters that inhabit it. We're like the Planeteers, Kwame and Ma-Ti. All we needs are the other three Planeteers, a pet monkey, matching rings and we're set.”
He took a sip of his rapidly-cooling drink. Talking with Jia had made him forget all about his drink for the moment. Somehow lukewarm coffee just wasn't as good. But as it was only a little past eight in the morning, Xan figured he could use all the caffeine he could get.
“It was either this or something to do with cars. I'm pretty handy with machinery as well. Talk to them too,” he half joked. “I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, other than something with animals or machines. Making animals feel better though—there's just something more rewarding about it. I heard someone wise say this once, 'can't do something smart, do something right', you know? Though...I think I heard that on TV.”
Giving her a reassuring smile, Xan decided he liked this girl. She wasn't just a pretty face. He hoped everyone else was just as friendly. “I'm sure you'll figure out what you want to be and where you're headed. So what else do you like? Are you into sports or music?”
