The eerie early morning air would have set like frozen water crystals trapped beneath the bone any one person's body, but not Beth, she'd never run through the low lying cloud coverage, weather was far more different than what she'd grown accustomed to, Oklahoma could be cold, but not like this, shivering and sweating lightly beneath a heavy hooded sweatshirt Beth let herself sink into considering thoughts of the world.
Somehow suffering meant repentance and shivering meant that you were alive, blood pulsing through a beating heart, and a constant reminder of the ordeal that she'd been denying lately.
Nothing mattered right now except to run, to leave behind every painful memory of the nights of her attacks, to run for freedom...for the momentary riddance of all things haunting ones soul...for the possible idea that you if she could simply pick up speed and run further than before or faster then maybe she could make it as though those nights had never occurred. The idea that she might be able to save Desmond the anguish that he seemed to suffer as a result of who he was and the fear that he might hurt the woman that he loved. She wanted nothing more than to save the world, starting with her friend, it was a sad understanding however that if she could not save herself then how might she save her friends. She closed her eyes and relied upon the scents of the world around her as her feet carried her one step closer to the edge of the Earth.
Then winter came and there was little left between us
Skin and bones of love won't make a meal
I felt my eyes drifting over your shoulder
There were wolves at the edge of the field
But I still remember that time when we were dancing
We were dancing to a song that I'd heard
Your face was simple and your hands were naked
I was singing without knowing the words
Shivering once more as the night rainfall clung to her already soaked through sweatshirt and her golden curls. Beth pushed onward, fearing that she were no longer human but rather a walking existence, a shell of a former self... the person that she was capable of becoming but was not due to the recent troubles of her life and the distance from her family and faith with ever new piece of history and mistake that every breath was, life would never be perfect but it was a dream that she would strive for, as close to her own personal perfection...a degree of inner happiness that she used to enjoy.
As the music continued to pound deep into her brain Beth breathed deeply again, a distant aroma of coffee and wild honeysuckle...previously warmed in the summer sun and she stopped, her footfalls heavy against the grounds of Alden as she opened his eyes and began to take in the surroundings. SHe breathed in again...the coffee must have been from the Green Bean coffee shop, making it's way along the air currents. Glancing to the sky above she noted the bright moon that still hung high and considered the number of hours that needed to pass before the sky was clouded in early morning twilight and the birds that would chirp their songs of greeting for the new day. hHe imagined her family thousands of miles away, sleeping soundly in their warm bed, even Danny doing the same as well, and she wondered what God might think of her now as he looked down upon her from the heavens above.
This sure was to be a very very long life ahead of her but Beth was determined to make the best of it, no regrets because she knew from her upbringing that regretting never fixed anything. As she came upon her dorm Beth pulled at the door and ran up the stairs towards her on campus apartment, after a quick shower she blow dried her hair and gathered her books.
She was running late to her first class, the most dreaded of all...math, it was also the only one that she was near flunking out of, she needed a tutor and needed one fast. With her books in hand and dressed in a black & white dress, paired with a blue belt Beth rushed through the halls, her thoughts drifting to the dreams she'd been having since Desmond had saved her life. It was a scary thing for her to consider, the minute she let her mind wander it would come back to the desires that she never wished to have for her friend, and she fought against the aching she felt within her dreams. She'd keep her thoughts of him buried there...deep in the confines of her mind, safe and away from adding to the already messy situation.
Rounding the corner she tripped over her own two feet and fell on the hard floor and looked up to see a figure standing before the classroom door, studying a note.
