“The subtle nuances of the way you pronounce things are how I discerned your ethnicity. Have you lived in the United States long?” Dhivael thought Yanagi’s English sounded good enough that she had either studied for a long time or had been in the United States for a while, but her accent suggested she hadn’t been outside of Japan for very long.
The angel didn’t seem to protest when Dhivael offered to help her with her personal affects which was just as well. She would have helped without a good enough reason not to do so anyway. Without feeling pride in the same way as Earthlings, she could not understand the emotional drive behind not accepting help when assistance was the more efficient route.
It wasn’t long before they left the dorm, Dhivael locking it behind her, and they headed toward Yanagi’s summer dorm. “How many other boxes do you have?” All of the Rihan’s personal items could have fit into two, medium sized boxes if she went by Earthling standards of packing.
Dhivael’s eyes moved to the angel’s face when the other asked about her new roommate’s species. It was strange that the woman seemed… nervous if her assessment of emotions was correct. The angel refused to look the alien in the eye or even look in her general direction. Dark eyes moved back to the path ahead of her. “The simplest answer for Earthlings to understand is that I am an extraterrestrial. My people are called Rihannsu, and I am one Rihan among them.” She had learned that it was very easy to be mistaken for a human. Their biology was remarkably similar though there were a few differences. It was not uncommon at Alden for her to be asked what variety of being she was, and she was not ashamed. It was a simple fact, and that was all.
“I am majoring in anthropology. I hope it will aid me in my studies to better understand Earthlings. What is yours?” When she had been told who her roommate would be, she didn’t look beyond the basics. Majors could always be changed or adjusted, so it seemed to be a waste of time to research things of that nature.
