She tried to plan a good way to give him a good hit to his groin, and she debated whether that would actually hurt him enough that she could get away. Then he repeated the question he’d asked when he’d first pulled her shirt above her chest, and he lowered his head like he was about to… Sudden understanding hit her though it didn’t alleviate her fear. He was baiting her, trying to make her fear him. Although he was doing a pretty decent job in the fear department, she realized that this was just another way for him to push her away, to push everyone away from him.
That or she was making serious miscalculations. She suddenly didn’t think he would rape her, but if she was wrong, and she hit the wrong button, it could set him off. He could seriously hurt her, and they were in the privacy of her room, so it was unlikely that Alissa would know she needed saving. Life was about risks, though. She’d been lonely for the last four years because she was too afraid to take risks. Then again, this was a huge risk.
Her eyes studied his as if she could search through the dark fire in them to find the answer. She couldn’t, of course, but it occurred to her that if he really wanted to rape her, he probably wouldn’t do it slowly, and she felt like he probably wouldn’t rape her. If he wanted in her pants, he would have tried to schmooze his way into them, not display his power over her to insight fear.
It felt like an eternity before she could answer his question, but really, it was only a couple of seconds. “Yes. I think you’re lying!” How was her voice so steady through her fear and through the heat that was coursing through her? “You’re just trying to scare me, to make me take the step to push you away. It won’t work.” Her brows knit together as looked at him defiantly, hoping that she hadn’t just committed a serious miscalculation.
