Jia Li thought about what the siren said. It sounded pretty sensible. After all, she had a similar problem. If she wasn’t fast enough to disappear into a tree, she was just as screwed as if someone punched Kaydence in the throat. There were ways around a person’s abilities no matter what they were. The world was an incredibly dangerous place. It seemed especially hard for supernatural beings because there were those humanist sects that thought they needed to rid the world of her kind. It was awful. “Did you live in some suburban area where everything was protected all the time or something?”
Jia Li couldn’t have avoided the real world had she tried. The weight of the segregation of her kind and the evils of what people could do had been thrust upon her. Thankfully, it hadn’t ruined her childhood, but it had seriously hindered her teen years. If Alden hadn’t existed, she would probably be going to some crappy community college rather than getting a top rate education.
