She always noticed that they were closer than most others, but now that her viewpoint was tinged with romanticism, she thinks maybe there is something else there.
It might be hormones, a leftover from giving birth and recovering and coming back to work a little sooner than she should have but still it’s office work how hard will it be, and then again it might just be the fact that she was removed from the situation for a short amount of time, and now she can enter the office with a fresh pair of eyes and see the world around her.
Danny leans into Martin’s personal space far too much for a friend over by the whiteboard, until they’re almost touching and are most assuredly sharing the same oxygen, and she says under her breath “Huh, look at that.”
The residue of a case like this always causes a disturbance long after it is over, making Danny put his head onto his desk and just breathe at random intervals and Viviane create a new filing system for the cold cases without prompting and Elena to bring out her phone in the break room and sit for many long minutes just listening to her daughter talk about the boys on the playground and Jack to lurk behind partially closed blinds in his office where he gets to pretend he’s cold and unfeeling and just not human.
She was slightly surprised a year ago to learn that she and Martin were the rocks in these instances, the two people on the team who provide comfort to the detriment of themselves. Her antics in getting Jack to leave his office were legendary even before Martin came to the team, and he smiles when she offers some to repeat for today.
He shakes his head this time, and shoves himself upwards like the world is balancing on his shoulders. Walks away from her without a word, picks up a report from his desk, then moves over to Danny with all his breathing and perches on the edge of the desk, looking at the report with a casual indifference and just being there.
It is enough to make her marvel at herself. She must be really special to have not noticed this before.
And then she shoves herself up, in what she suspects the same way Martin does in times like these, and goes to help Viviane with her filing.
Only one lift in the entire building is working, and once again she is cursing Government budget cuts. Holds one coffee in one hand for herself, another for Jack in the other hand, and is eternally grateful when she can step off of the overcrowded car into the free space of the hallway outside of the Missing Persons Unit’s offices.
She turns, stops, and just looks.
Danny isn’t paying attention, juggling Martin’s knapsack and his own tote of random items in both hands while talking too fast about something she can’t catch, but Martin sees her, notices her, and doesn’t say anything, nodding in time to his friend’s chatter but not taking his eyes off of her.
And just like that, they have a telepathic communication, or at least an understanding without words. Because she takes in the arm slung around Danny’s neck, and the way their hips touch as they walk, and the full of joie de vivre grins cemented on both their faces, and she isn’t speculating anymore, and he isn’t letting her.
They walk past, her head swivelling to keep them in sight, and Danny finally notices her, says “Hey, Sam, Goodnight!”
She expresses the same farewell, and keeps watching as they disappear past the doorway that leads into the stairwell.
She smiles, says under her breath, “Huh, look at that.”
The cups of coffee are cooling in her hands, and she turns back to rush into Jack’s office.
