Who: Ickle Sirius, Dr. Lance Sweets and big Sirius.
What: A chance meeting and a piano.
When: Mid-morning
Where: The ballroom.
Rating: Medium. Will update if neccessary.

After his strange little talk with his brother over the network, discussing the possibility of staying at a strange house outside the castle, Sirius had wanted to get out. Even at his young age, he knew he'd feel better if he got to run around and be on his own for a tiny bit. He knew he would go stay with Regulus and Al, if Reg wanted to, but he didn't trust the adults - any adults, really - and he didn't want to be stuck with people he wasn't sure about with no way to escape. He'd had enough of that at home. But his little brother kept insisting everything would be fine, and if there was one thing Sirius knew it was that he wouldn't leave him on his own.

Sirius jumped down the last two stairs in the flight, landing neatly on his toes on the stone floor. There was music coming from somewhere. A piano - he recognised it from the few lessons he'd allowed himself to be subjected to. Sirius pressed his lips together into a tight little line and rocked onto his heels for a moment, bony fingers curling into his palm, before following the sound.

He ended up at the entrance to the ballroom, hands stuffed into his trouser pockets. There was a young man there, and Sirius examined his profile as he played. A moment later the young boy was bounding across the room and all but running into the side of the piano. Sirius balanced his chin on the top of the instrument and watched for a moment - he might not trust many adults, but that didn't mean he had a problem bothering them. Sirius didn't have a problem with bothering most people.

"What're you doing?" he asked. "There's no'one listening."

The Titanic theme song, Lance had told his friend Hodgens once that no one could play it like he could, and he still believed it even while inhabiting the body of someone else. The notes were well remembered and he didn't have to do more than a few scales and a practice run through an easy song to work out stumbling fingers on new and unfamiliar hands before he was playing anything he desired.

He didn't flinch as the boy hit the side of the piano and peered up at him. He was building up a swell that commanded most of his concentration and didn't break for something as non-threatening as a question from a child. But once passed the intense portion of the song he turned his head and looked down at the boy who seemed to greatly resemble the smaller version of Regulus Black. That fact did not throw him, if one adult could have a younger version of themselves arrive it stood to reason any adult could have the same thing happen to them.

"I'm listening," he answered with a smile, and after a pause and a number of notes, "we don't always have to do things for other people, we can do things for ourselves if we want to."

Sirius didn't reply for a moment, instead turning his gaze down to watch the way the man's fingers danced over the black and white keys. Never an expert at staying still, Sirius rocked his feet to either side, so he was balanced on the sides of his shoes, his ankles twisted. Then he crossed his arms underneath his chin to stop the hard wood pressing into him, and looked back up.

"Not if they're bad things," he pointed out. The young man frowned and narrowed his eyes at the boy sat on the stool. He looked younger than most of the grown ups he knew, but even so Sirius had a hard time distinguishing a seventeen year old from a twenty-something. In his young mind they were all the same.

"Is that your real body?" he suddenly asked. So many people had changed that it was hard to know who was who any more. He might have already met this person somewhere else, and then he'd just look stupid. Sirius bit down on his bottom lip until it flushed a deep pink, then continued, lifting his head and tilting his chin in a way he'd seen adults back home do. "If I was doing something for myself I wouldn't play the piano. Aren't you bored? You should go outside."

Lance nodded immediately as the boy responded, he was winding down to the end of the song which allowed him to divide his attention more as the notes became less involving. "Astutely noted. I amend my statement then. As long as we aren't harming others there's nothing wrong with doing something for ourselves."

The boy seemed content for a moment but it also seemed he was full of more observations. "Nope," Lance shook his head, "Normally I'm older, taller, wavier hair. This body belongs to a young name named Kurt. I'm Lance, though."

The song was ended then and Lance turned fully to face the young boy, to answer more of his questions. Which Lance didn't find annoying in the slightest, given his days were filled with nothing but leisure and would be until his bid went through on a rental space in the city and he could open his own practice. "I do like to go outside, on occasion. Hiking, biking, kayaking, more the adventure outdoors sports. Today I wanted to play the piano. What do you like doing outside?"

"Kurt's blue. And german. And he has a tail." Sirius frowned, looking Lance and his borrowed body a look up and down. Quite obviously this wasn't the body of the man he'd spoken to on the network. "I think it must be a different Kurt," Sirius finally decided, dropping back onto the flats of his feet. He didn't offer his own name, and dropped his gaze down back to the keys and the man finished off the song and the last night dissolved into the hush of the ballroom, leaving them in silence. Sirius shifted uncomfortably in the new hush.

He didn't know what kayaking was. It was probably a muggle thing, but Sirius' curiousity was quelled a little by the sudden question. He hesitated, searching his mind for the answer this new adult wanted from him, although he wasn't quite sure if he was going to give it or go for the oppposite, just to try and annoy him. In the end Sirius gave the man a ten-year-old's version of a scathing look.

"Playing," he answered, dismissively. Sirius reached over and pressed one skinny finger against a key, liking the deep sound that came from the instrument and vibrated up his arm. Then he looked up again to find that Lance was still looking at him.

"With my brother." he added.

"Very true, as I am not blue, nor do I have a tail."

Lance saw the frown forming on the face of his audience of one and watched it turn into a full-faced look of derision. He didn't smile at this, children wanted to be taken seriously as much as any adult would, not have their contributions to a conversation readily dismissed. Too many adults failed to realize children experienced the same range of emotion they did, and, in fact, Lance would argue, some adults chopped that range down for themselves so they actually felt less.

"Playing is a good past time, and I'm sure your brother enjoys it."

He placed his hands on the keys again and pressed two cords that resonated well with the note the young boy had pressed. "Do you know how to play the piano?" he continued while finding other keys to press that carried the continuity of their improvised song.

"I had lessons once," Sirius replied, with a faint not of pride. "My Mother made me, but I didn't like them so I put dungbombs and stuff in the piano and then I didn't have to do it any more."

He gave up on the piano as soon as the other man started playing again, not wanting to join in if he couldn't be in charge. If it got ruined it might be his fault, and he wasn't about to risk that with an adult he didn't know. Sirius curled his fingers around the edge of the piano and rocked as far back on his heels as he dared, clinging to the wooden instrument to keep himself upright. He kept his eyes focused on the side of the man's borrowed face.

"D'you like having a new face?" he asked, still swinging backwards. "I wanted one but none of us got one."

Lance laughed then. Whether this boy meant to share that anecdote in an attempt to make a joke or to frighten him he did not know but he took it as humor and treated it so. It was a good story. "No, I don't suppose she would make you after that. I never tried anything like that."

When the boy stopped pressing the key Lance let up on one hand though he continued plunking out a few notes with the other, nothing complicated or loud. He merely kept sound coming from the piano. He looked down at the child again.

"It..." he searched for the right word to describe this experience. "If we had known and chosen to try ourselves I'm sure it would be more enjoyable. I would sure like to know when it will end. Who do you want to be?"
