The magical fireworks that Hermione had set off were really something else. Who'd have thought, magic. This place had a lot of good things, moreso than bad, and it was nothing like back at home. Give the prison group a choice and Rick knew they would take this place with it's oddities over walkers, starvation, and the fading glint of humanity any day. So would he.
Problem was, life was a little less meaningful when those you loved most weren't there to share it with you. Rick had come a very long way since he'd arrived. His visions of Lori faded into bad dreams and old memories. The group had it's share of bumps but as usual they stuck it out. They were alive, thriving, happy, almost. More than anything he wanted that for Carl and Judith.
It's why when there was no more food to be cooked, fireworks to watch, or guests to put on a smile for, Rick had gone for a walk around the lake. He kept his eyes on the lot of people as they lingered to chat or leave when the fireworks were done, occasionally watching the reflections in the water.
No matter how hard he tried there was an empty pit in his stomach, the better piece of his heart left back in the hellhole that was a walker infested home. But it's where his son and daughter were. He'd done well to try and not think so selfishly, to move on and do what he could. But Rick's deep feelings always got the better of him and he found himself missing his family something awful.
It was his hope that the walk would shake the feelings off and push him back into a more positive way of thinking.
