Who: Rachel and Elena
When: Backdated to Thursday July 5
Where: Coffee place
What: Rachel needs someone to talk to
Status/Rating: Incomplete and Closed/PG-13ish
Warnings: None

Rachel was trying to be strong for Finn, she loved him but knew that he had screwed up. At the wedding she had such a great time and wanted to spend so much time with him, but on the inside she was still freaking out. She always thought about the worse thing possible, what if him and Ron got sentenced to more time in prison? Would she wind up being alone and for how long? She just needed to talk this out with someone. Thankfully Elena had said that she would meet her for coffee, she needed to let someone know how she was really feeling, maybe she would even have the nerve to tell Finn about her fears.

Catching the trolley into the city she sighed as she found the coffee place. Yes, she needed a good cup of coffee. As she went up to the counter she ordered black coffee with rice milk, it was really delicious. Paying for her coffee she waited for it and then once it was ready she went and found a table and just sat there waiting for Elena.

Glad to finally be of some use to people rather than the sole source of their distress, Elena finished what she was doing quickly. Being there as a friend to people she had been getting to know was great, though she wished they weren't going through confusing times. Adapting and making friends fast were too traits she had lacked since her parents died, but the fact that she could do it now suggested Elena had come a much longer way than initially thought. Or maybe they were just distractions to her own pain.

Shrugging the idea off as she made her way off the trolley, Elena hurried to the coffee stop. Having to stop once or twice for directions, she found her way to the designated spot in a timely fashion nonetheless. Once she got there, Elena bypassed ordering anything herself. Concerned for her friend, she found where she sat and took the empty chair in front of Rachel.

"I made it," she said with the most encouraging smile she could muster. "With my ears which are ready for listening whenever you're ready."

Rachel didn't know how she ever got so lucky to make new friends. Yes, she loved having Finn, Blaine, and Kurt here with her but when it came time to talking about her fears dealing with Finn right now she knew that she couldn't really talk about it to either of them, plus she didn't want to ruin Kurt and Blaine's marital bliss right now all because she was afraid of Finn's upcoming court date.

As she sat there just thinking about what she was going to say instead of just sitting there crying she knew that she had to be strong and just talk it out with Elena and see what she suggested, does she tell Finn and cry on his shoulder? Or perhaps just telling him that she was afraid, but she couldn't because she didn't want to upset him. They had gone so long without fighting.

When she saw Elena sitting in the empty chair she gave her a welcoming smile. "Hi, I'm so glad that you could make it." She nervously took a sip of her coffee. Giving a sigh, "I need some advice on something." She took another sigh, "You see Finn and uhhh that Ron Weasley, they were arrested for breaking an entering at the school because they wanted to play football for some odd reason. They have this upcoming court date you see, I'm terrified that Finn is going to go back to prison for something so small. I've tried to be strong and happy around Finn, but I just can't anymore. I've cried myself to sleep just thinking about it."

Taking note of her appearance, Elena found herself really hoping that she could make some sort of difference for Rachel. They had hit it off as friends, it seemed, and that meant a lot to Elena. Friendship was a driving force in her life. For now, though, all she could do was hope for the best. So, she listened intently to everything that Rachel began to divulge about what was going on. It noticeably surprised her to hear that Finn had done such a thing with... a Harry Potter character apparently.

No wonder she was upset.

Sitting back with a bewildered look on her face, Elena's sympathy turned to concentration. What kind of moving advice could she give in this scenario? With Lily it had been easy, they were a bit alike in their situations. At home, her friends all knew what was going on and the extremities therein, but this was a sort of real world problem that would have been refreshing to tangle with if not for the fact that Rachel was her friend.

Best not to over think it, she quickly decided. Speaking off the cuff didn't always work, but Elena doubted this could turn into a disaster.

"I get that you want to be strong for him," Elena started tentatively, voice filled with gentle understanding. This she could empathize with easily, she tended to do that, too. "And it sucks now that you found your breaking point, but you shouldn't feel bad for finding it anymore than he'll be upset with you that you did. We're people, you know? Too many cuts start to hurt."

Hiding from significant others created all sorts of unpleasant problems in the long run. With an uneasy swallow, Elena knew what she wanted to say. "My advice is to stop trying to be what you can't be. There's nothing wrong with being upset about it. You're not letting him down by worrying, you let him down by not letting him know when you feel this bad. You can count on Finn for anything, right?"

Rachel didn't want to become a burden with her worries and fears, but it was kind of nice that she could lay everything on the table and have someone to talk to. She wondered what Kurt would say or do if she went and just cried to him. That would be problematic though because he was still a newlywed and probably wouldn't want to hear such things from her, it would just ruin his mood.

Looking at Elena she was fidgeting a little bit with her hair and messing around with her coffee cup. Taking some sips every so often and just looked around nervously. What would Elena say to all of this? Would she still want to be friends after all of this, maybe after she got her advice they could just move on to another topic, make it a fun day for them. Maybe they could even do a little shopping. It excited her a little bit that she was able to make more friends here. Elena seemed like a really cool person to be around.

Then she started talking and she listened to her advice. "Yeah I get that. And its been on my mind a lot. I know that I shouldn't be thinking about the worse that can happen. I mean it was just a little offense, but I don't know how Land of Make Believe's judicial system works."

Nodding her head, Elena was right. "You know you are so right. I should just let him know what's going on and just talk it out with him. I can count on him for anything, he's my husband and I love him. I know that I'll still be there for him and everything. I'm going to talk to him and set things straight with him." She sighed, "Thank you for the advice by the way, even if it was just that one thing, I really appreciate it." She said looking at her.

"So how are things going? You're taking summer classes right?" She asked, switching the topic so that this time just wasn't about her.

Not at all faulting Rachel for worrying, Elena figured she would be in the same boat had the situation been reversed. How many nights had she spent pacing restlessly in concern for Stefan, even Damon? Lovers and family, friends like family, those were the people that set nerves wholly on edge when things turned grim. Calming down from present issues was never easy, but Rachel latched on to the advice and that made Elena feel good. She really could still help her friends. Well, in the moment anyway. Knowing very little about Finn served as a semi-disadvantage in properly advising Rachel. Nice as Rachel as, she hoped Finn would step up to bat.

"It's a valid concern, believe me," she nodded in agreement. If anyone blamed her for being in worry overdrive, they could kindly see themselves out of the scenario. From her vantage point, however, Elena saw Rachel as someone who had isolated the woes within herself. She knew what that was like, internalizing until everything felt like an earthquake threatening already unstable foundations. Those were the kind of faults that could swallow one whole without external assistance. It was nice to be that person.

"Good," she smiled. "I'm sure it'll work out." Shaking her head at Rachel's words of gratitude, she politely dismissed them. "We're friends! Come to me anytime you need help with something, believe me. I've had my fair share of love troubles, I get where you're coming from." Just in a much, much more dangerous way. That gave her advice some validity, she guessed.

Switching gears to lighter conversation, Elena nodded at her last question. "Yep, I was a senior back home, so just trying to finish that off painlessly. Things are..." Pausing to honestly consider the inquiry, she pursed her lips in thought. "Things are good, I guess. Still a little on the overwhelming and confusing side." That was mostly where boys were concerned, sadly. She didn't want to dwell on a potentially negative conversation. "Oh! I talked to Damon and he.. shockingly was down for hanging out, the four of us. Karaoke, whatever." That was something good to share. "So, we have something to plan when Finn is definitely cleared and all of that is behind you guys."

It was good that she was able to let out all of her feelings just have a normal conversation. No fighting, just talking. She was really kind of upset at Ronald Weasley, she could barely talk to him without him saying something else that would upset her. So he was from a different place where bad things happened, it didn't mean that she wasn't allowed to be scared or upset about what happened to him and Finn, it shouldn't have happened in the first place. She didn't want to fight with Ron either, but he just annoyed her at times.

"I'm sure it will too. After all a good marriage means good communication and being honest with each other. And I'm in this with him for better or for worse." She then laughed, "I'm so glad that I was able to make some more friends here. You are a pretty cool person to hang out with and everything. Definitely making this whole day better." She said as she took a drink from her coffee cup.

"I am really glad that things are looking up for you. I'm sure that you will get through summer school and will be able to take college classes in the fall." She said with a smile. And then she got really excited, "Oh that's great. I'm excited about meeting Damon, After this whole court stuff gets behind us, I will definitely have to call or something and set something up. Maybe everything will be alright and there will be some need to celebrate." She said shrugging her shoulders and taking another sip of her coffee.

To be in receipt of such a compliment prompted Elena to a brighter smile. When was the last time she had heard anything remotely close to that from her two best girl friends? Elena believed she had let Caroline and Bonnie down worse than anyone else, and didn't expect total forgiveness anytime soon. She could hardly expect a reversal, a rubber band snap back to the way things had been. She could wish for it all she wanted, but it wouldn't happen. No matter how much she wanted it to be better.

"Thank you," she responded appreciatively. "And I'm glad it's getting better. You deserve it. Should've been nothing but clear sailings for you." The poor girl had just gotten married and everything. Elena wondered if that would be her luck, to wind up in a relationship with a permanent stamp and drowned by a persistent rain cloud with her name on it.

College should have been on her mind. Honestly, all she wanted to do was get through high school first. After her brushes with death, the future had become so vague that she began to live moment to moment. That had led her to make a decision between two men that occupied slots in her heart, a decision she still second guessed. Even so, Elena kept a smile and felt inclined to agree. Those were natural steps, necessary ones if she wanted to get anywhere in life. Her ultimate destination was still a blank slate.

Maybe college there would help steer her in the right direction.

"Yeah," she started, searching for something more profound to say. "Maybe it'll give me some direction" As for Damon, Elena really hoped that it wouldn't go badly, the four of them getting together. The last time she had done a double date with him, he had been with Caroline and she with Stefan; nothing ever had worked out back then. Damon was different now, had her name engraved on his heart, and she hoped that meant he would be on his best behavior for her sake. "That'd be great. It's no rush, I'm just glad he.. agreed." Her tone tapered off, almost unsettled by the way she felt so eager to involve him in things with her. He was really under her skin. "We could do a karaoke celebratory party," Elena suggested, hastily distracting herself from her sole source of confusion. "Drinks, snacks, and singing our hearts out for fun. Sounds pretty good to me!"

She couldn't help but smile, it was as if Elena had just said what she had been thinking about all this time. It was just her job now to actually say something to Finn. She just worried about what he would say to her, would he take it the wrong way? Or he could just console her and let her know that everything was going to be alright, it was just the matter of communicating with him, which she would do later that day.

"Yeah I think that both Finn and I deserve to be happy. You know we would watch our show when it was on. I just can't believe what happened to us, I am so glad that we're married here and everything. After graduation back home we were supposed to get married, but he ended up breaking up with me and told me that he was enlisting in the army." She sighed, "It still depresses me sometimes but we're a lot happier here in this place than what we would be back home."

She actually couldn't wait for her college classes to start here. There would be plenty of things for her to do and she would be going to college with Finn, Kurt and Blaine. Which reminded her that after the musical she needed to go and sign up for her classes.

"Well, hey if you want some help with anything let me know. You told me one time that you liked writing right? You could be an English major and then go from there. I mean college is all about experiencing different things to figure out what you really want to do with your life right?" She asked her and it was the truth, although she knew what she wanted to do which was musical theater.

She then gave her a smile. "That sounds perfect. I just bought this new karaoke machine the other day. After their court date I'm going to need some fun so we can definitely do that. I can't wait! So tell me about Damon, he is a hermit or something?" She said as she took another drink from her coffee cup.

Happiness had become relative to Elena. It existed in the moments between heartbreak and relief. Things weren't always good back home, but maybe they could be here. She missed her best friends, brother, and Stefan badly, but she could make it. Somehow that felt better than being dead, which was the future that likely awaited her in Mystic Falls if ever she had to go back. Elena tried not to think about it anymore.

"It's like this place is all about giving second chances," she mused, fancying the thought. "Wouldn't that be crazy?" It was a much better thought than anything else she had considered the past month or so.

Now she had school to look forward to finishing and possibly college as the next step. Elena listened gratefully to Rachel's suggestions on that front, though her uncertainty toward the future continued to make her hesitate. Where was the harm in trying to further a chance at normalcy? Sure, she was in love with two vampires, only one of which was here and not the one she had chosen, but otherwise...

"It's a thought," she agreed. "College is supposed o be about self-discovery, you're right. I really shouldn't miss out on that. I'll look into it. Could be fun. Thanks!" It was nice to have some words of encouragement on that front.

Having settled into the lighthearted tone of their conversation, Elena's smile almost wavered at her curiosity over Damon. So swift to put down any chance at there being something between the two of them, she knew it must have been perceived strangely. She spent a lot of her time going over to his place. With a much more apprehensive smile, Elena lifted her right hand to clamp over the back of her neck. "Damon's... I wouldn't say hermit," she began, mind searching for something better to say. "He's weird." No, that wasn't it. "Like... he's social, he's just not always good with.. people."

To his credit, he had gotten better. Trying to ease up on the immediate defense mechanisms that popped up when it came to him, Elena flashed Rachel an apologetic smile. "Things are complicated with Damon. Sorry, I don't mean to be weird about it. He's great when he wants to be, it should be fun when we all get together."
