WHO: Ron Weasley and Ariadne
WHEN: Thursday evening
WHERE: In town
WHAT: Random meeting, of sorts.
WARNINGS: None expected, will update if necessary.

Despite his overriding belief that what he'd done had been nothing more than a bit of fun that had gotten blown out of proportion, Ron wasn't quite thick enough not to realize that it had upset Hermione. A lot. And though she'd been great about it, and had seemed for the most part to forgive him, he still felt like he needed to do a little something more to make it up to her. So he'd taken off that morning, towards the muggle part of town, trying to find something special, something that would show that he'd gone to a lot of effort and a lot of thought to find.

Problem was, he had no idea what any of these things were. Or what kind of things girls liked, really. From storewindow to storewindow he walked, pausing, contemplating, then finally giving up in frustration to move to the next one.

Finally, his hope of finding the perfect gift almost entirely gone, he noticed a small brunette girl coming down the street towards him, and quickened his pace in her direction.

"Hey there," he said, his tone imploring, but friendly. "You're a girl. Fancy giving me a hand with something?"

Ariadne was heading toward the trolley stop, as she normally did, after getting off of work. It was routine, at this point. She was considering getting a car at some point but, in a way, the trolley had been somewhat endearing and had grown on her as part of her routine. The red haired boy walking toward her in a quickened pace and asking her for a hand with something on the basis that she was female was hardly part of her normal routine. She had no desire for it to be either.

"Uhm, excuse you?" She stared at him, baffled and not impressed in the least. He looked familiar, but the question of where didn't matter in light of the pervy sounding question. "That's a bit rude, don't you think?"

Ron was a bit taken aback, and stared at her for a minute, somewhere between hurt and confused.

"W-what? I...just asked for your help, is all."

He turned away, shoving his hands in his pockets.

"Mental, that one is," he mumbled.

"I'm the mental one? You came up and said I was a girl, so - could I give you a hand with something..." Ariadne's eyes narrowed and she paused. Was this guy that naive as to think that what he asked was completely innocent? She was having a hard time imagining that, but he looked a bit young. (Never mind the fact she did as well, despite her age.) "Like guys do when they're being a creep and trying to pick up a girl - it's hardly mental to dislike that."

Sighing, she gave him a confused and unsettled look before taking a few more steps, not taking her (still) baffled gaze off of him as she went to walk past him and continue on her way. She hoped to high heaven that she didn't have a reason to worry, but she was still planning to stay aware of the guy.

"Wait, what?"

Pick her up???

"You're delusional, you are! I guess you're pretty enough and all, but no offense, my fiancee's much prettier. And I'm hardly the kind of guy - do I look like that much of a wanker, really?"

"If the past couple of days have taught me anything, a guy doesn't have to look like a 'wanker' to be one." Ariadne said with a frown, taking a hint of offense at being insistently called delusional for taking the boy's words for their face value.

Then, with the mention of "wanker," it hit her. She tilted her head a little and paused in her step, staring at him. "And - oh, I do know you. You're the guy who upset the kids by saying you were glad poor Neville was gone."

"Oh, bloody hell, that was a long time ago. Look, I don't have anything against Neville. He's one of my best mates. Yeah, seeing...little Neville here was a bit...odd, but I mean, I didn't wish him any harm or anything. Just...you know, I was glad he wasn't rooming with my girlfriend anymore. What's wrong with that?"

He crossed his arms, a rather defensive frown on his face. It wasn't like it had never happened before - people misinterpreting his words and intentions, but that didn't mean he liked it, either.

"I just wanted to buy something for Hermione. To say sorry. And thought, you know, since you were a girl, you might know what girls like. I was hardly trying to get in your knickers."

"Your phrasing, if I remember correctly." Ariadne crossed her arms, sighing. She was starting to understand the situation. He didn't seem to think before he talked and, considering the fact the guy seemed to be upset at her for taking his statement at face value, it seemed like it might've come up more than once as a problem in his life.

"Gender hardly matters. If you're engaged to her, you know her. You know what she'd like." At least Ariadne hoped he would. "And - good luck."

"No, hang on, wait," he cried. "It's not that you're a girl so much as, well, I know rubbish about muggle things. But I figured she'd think something from the magical district was too easy, that I just walked down there and grabbed the first thing I saw. I thought, you know, something from the muggle district might make her think I went to a bit more trouble for her, see?"

He sighed.

"But I've been here hours and I don't know what any of this stuff is. I don't know what it does. I don't know anything about any of it. I don't know what someone might consider a good gift, or what's out of style. I don't know muggle trends. And I just need some help. 'Cause I want to do this right."

He looked at her, blue eyes wide, and surprisingly pleading.

"Please?"

Ariadne sighed, pausing and mentally swearing in French. She usually only swore in French if alone and something surprised her, out of habit, or in public when she was concerned someone would understand her swearing in English. Still, it came out as French in her mind. Why did she help guys who acted like creeps?

"You're making a mistake if you want to do this right on the basis of trends. Tell me a little about your Fiancée - what sorts of things does she like? Her interests?"

"Well, she's bloody brilliant, and she reads all the time. But I wouldn't want to get her a book because she's like to have read everything, seriously. She...kind of isn't like other girls. She's...Merlin, she's so pretty and kind, and she's got such a warm heart...did you know that she started an organization at Hogwarts to free House Elves? Free them! Really. None of us ever thought of it until she came along. But she's right, you know. They got a tough break, house elves. Glad that my family never had any...not that we wouldn't have at some point if we could afforded it, probably. But...she likes cats, too. She has a cat. Well, it's part kneazle, and it tried to eat my rat, but he really wasn't a rat, he was an animagus named Peter Pettigrew who'd helped betray Harry's parents, and - "

Ron stopped, reddening.

"I'm rambling, aren't I?"

"Yes." Ariadne responded with a smile, trying to figure out how to go about this. She decided it was likely time to intervene by asking him a few questions instead of just asking him to explain what his fiancée was like. Obviously he liked her, or he wouldn't have proposed... but that didn't help her in offering gift suggestions.

"Favorite foods? Any hobbies besides reading and freeing - house elves?" Ariadne asked, then added, "Does she have any type of music she likes?"

She wasn't sure what to make about the animagus remark and Kneazle and so forth. She knew of some things relating to magic, by Daniel or Eames telling her, but it wasn't a subject that fascinated her.

"Wait..." he said slowly, something popping into his mind. "I...saw in a magazine here, those little electronic things that can hold like hundreds and hundreds of books in them. You know what I mean? I think she'd like one of those. How much are they? I have like...eight dollars, I guess?"

Bloody hell, he needed a job.

Of course, coming across one of those could be a lot more difficult, now.

"A Kindle? The cheapest is probably around $79, plus tax." Ariadne frowned when he mentioned how much he had. She was a nice person, but she wasn't that nice. "And - honestly, you're going to be hard pressed to get more than a few flowers for eight dollars."

"You could always try making something for her. Maybe some 'promise certificates' she can redeem where you promise to - clean up the living room, cook the meal, and so on?"

"Yeah, maybe," he said with obvious disappointment. "I need to find a job, is more like it. But I doubt any place is going to hire me, now."

He wasn't whining, just stating what was to him a fairly obvious fact.

"Why wouldn't anywhere hire you now?" Ariadne asked cautiously, not having connected the details listed out as of yet. He had said that he needed to get a gift to apologize to his fiancee with, but he hadn't said why - or if the details were even associated.

"Well," he said a little sheepishly, scratching the side of his head nervously as his eyes drifted to his suddenly-very-interesting feet.

"I kind of got arrested."

Ariadne paused briefly before crossing her arms, shaking her head a little. She could see this being a source of anger from his fiancee. "How do you - get 'kind of' arrested?"

"I'm guessing you're not in juvenile age range anymore, since you have a fiancee? That's likely going to make it hard to get a job, yes, depending on why you were arrested. It sounds like you're going to need some luck in the near future."

Ron sighed.

"Finn and I broke into the school and stole a football. We were going to give it back, honest we were. But that doesn't seem to matter."

"Uh-" Ariadne stared, blankly, honestly somewhat baffled by his statement. "If a person broke into your room and took an item of yours, intending to keep it back, would it matter to you if they had planned to return it?"

"That's not the same," he said with a shrug. "We're not stealing from an individual. You don't do that, that's wrong. But it's a school, which is here to help us with stuff in the first place, right? So why would they care? It's like...well, it's more like stealing the Polyjuice ingredients from Snape than it is doing something really bad."

"No, you're not stealing from an individual - you're stealing from every kid who goes to school there, all of the staff, and all of the taxpayers whose money went to fund the school." Ariadne wasn't harsh in her tone, but she wasn't going to sugarcoat the statement. She viewed what Ron had done as wrong.

"What would've happened had the ball popped while you were using it? Or - if a dozen other people had wanted to use it, right after you, and it had worn out because of that many people using the ball? Actions have consequences - and I don't know what stealing Polyjuice ingredients from Snape means, but what you're telling me about seems wrong."

"You're overreacting," he mumbled, shoving his hands in his pockets and looking away from her, the flush more than obvious on his pale and freckled complexion. "It's just a ball. And we were going to put it back. And bad things can always happen. But nothing did, so I don't see why it's such a big deal. The school got their ball back, and nothing's wrong with it."

Ron was fully aware that consequences had actions, but he still didn't understand why what he and Finn had done was considered to be so very, very wrong. They hadn't hurt anyone. They hadn't even hurt the ball. And if the school had been open, wouldn't they have let them borrow it in the first place?

"I'm not going to argue with a stranger who refuses to consider any view but their own. Good luck with your hearing." With that, Ariadne returned on her merry way toward the trolley stop.
