There were few times in his long life that Thor felt truly helpless and this night was one of them. He had resisted the painful ache of a broken spirit and heart when he heard the news on the network of Ariadne's death and he remained strong even after other went missing and presumably died themselves but after spending a night beyond the castle walls battling a ship full of reavers only to return and hear that yet another died he found his strength dwindling along with his hope.
He was a god among men, was he not? He was the son of Odin, the son of Gaea, the wielder of the mighty Mjolnir who could only be lifted and used by one worthy enough to do so! How could he, ruler of thunder and lighting, be useless against these hoards?! Was he not a hero? In those illustrated novels did they not portray him to be Earth's mightiest hero and soon, an Avenger?
Such questions were brought to the heavens. The sky, dark already as night had fallen, was lit up with clouds heavy with sparks of electricity. A strong wind picked up and his red cape danced in the wind's gusts as he lifted his hands toward the sky. One hand clutched Mjolnir, the other empty.
"Father!" he bellowed.
"Father, why do you not hear me? Heimdell, are you not all seeing? Do you not see where I stand in the midst of blood and terror on this world?! Can you do nothing, Odin?! Father, I beg of you! They are dying," his voice cracked at the last words and as if a giant weight had been placed on his shoulders, one even too heavy for an Asgardian, he fell to his knees.
"She has died," the heavens rumbled with a soft thunder and Thor's fist punched at the stone he had collapsed upon, hard enough to cause it to crack.
"She has died and I could not save her! Father, if you can hear me lend me the strength of Odin! I beg of you!"
It was met with nothing more than a single crack of thunder. Slowly, Thor stood back up and with his mouth set in a terrible scowl he held his hammer out toward the distant city.
"Mark these words, I will avenge her death, it shall not have been in vain!"
