Part 3
Bolting from the nightmares crowding in on him, Ianto opened his eyes to total darkness. Freezing cold, total darkness.
And a skin-crawling scraping against the hard stone floor that had visions of weevils closing in on him.
He scrambled off the cot and into the farthest corner of his cell. Hunkering down, he covered his head with his arms. He'd always thought himself a strong minded man, but the strain of grief, followed by his imprisonment was grinding him down to the frightened child inside the man. He could feel his consciousness retreating deeper into his own mind as he sought to escape in the only way open to him.
^^^^
Jack had been watching Ianto sleep. The imprisoned man had been in REM for fifteen minutes. Not long enough to get the rest he needed., but just enough for Jack to get the results he desired. He leaned forward in his chair and type a command into the computer monitoring the cell.
^^^
Ianto was wrenched from deep sleep by the explosive screeching of a siren, A brilliant light strobed through the cell so quickly that Ianto couldn't be sure it had been real. Until the strobbing repeated in an erratic pattern of long and rapid pauses that threw his ability to concentrate off.
He covered his head with trembling arms, squeezing his eyes closed tightly.
A blaring siren roared again, rattling Ianto's teeth, adding it's own erratic pattern to the discord assaulting Ianto's senses.
He could not brace himself against the unpredictable on-slought of blazing light and jarring sound. Could only ride out the horrible on again, off again of it.
^^^^
Jack smiled grimly as he tapped in another command. that done, he leaned back in his chair and waited, watching the monitor over steepled fingers.
^^^^
The stimulation ended as suddenly as it started, with Ianto having no idea how long it had assaulted his slowly crumbling defenses.
Ianto curled into a ball on the floor, shivering in the sudden heat. "What do you want to know, Sir?" Ianto shouted through his silent sobs. "What do you want me to tell you? I'll tell you anything. Anything, just..." He sighed, pulling himself together with a shaky moan. "But maybe you don't care what I might have to say, huh? Maybe you just want to play with me before...."
^^^
From his bunker, Jack whispered, "Oh, my deceptive boy, I care. You may never know how much I care."
Jack was very glad Ianto couldn't hear him at that moment. He did not want the man to know how much this was hurting his soul.
^^^
Ianto shoved himself up to a sitting position on the icy stone floors, drawing his legs up tight against his chest. "You're going to kill me when you get tired of toying with me. I know that, no need to deny it. And it's okay. No less than I deserve. So... all this is okay, Jack. I won't hate you." He loosed an ironic short laugh. "I know I said I'd watch you die someday. I was ....well, you know...but...I'm sorry....sorry I lashed out at you tonight." He pulled a thoughtful moue. "Was it tonight? Yesterday, maybe? Longer?"
Crossing his arms on his knees, he pillowed his head on them. "Are you listening to me, Sir? Watching me?" he asked the darkness in a subdued voice. "Have you abandoned me to die here?"
He closed his eyes, reckoning keeping them open in the absolute dark was a waste of his energy. "Did you wonder why I choose to bring Lisa here, Sir? Why not Glasgow? I mean Archie would have been a lot easier to get on over on. Being drunk most of the time. But he'd also have gotten everyone terminated when Lisa ...."
He paused, as if waiting for some response in the dark. "So, interest? Yes...? No..?"
^^^^
"That's it, boy. Tell me your story," Jack murmured. "Come on,now. Don't be shy. Get it all off your chest."
^^^^
He shrugged. "Part of my job at Torchwood London was to keep an eye on one Jack Harkness. Yvonne Hartman might have been one crazy bitch but she knew who to watch out for. And you, Sir, were her number one on the watch-list. She had me find every bit of information Torchwood had on you. Then had me dig deeper." He smiled in the darkness. "I am very good at digging deep."
He opened his eyes, turning his head in the darkness. "You listening, Sir?" He chuckled without humor. "I couldn't believe half the things I found buried in the records archives. You did a damn good job of clearing out the files, but you really should have gotten rid of them, not just buried them deep."
^^^^
Jack's smile was wolfish. "If you only knew the half of it you'd be running for cover."
^^^
Ianto paused as his memories rose up to choke him. "We should have seen it coming." he whispered, remembered horror thick in his voice. "Canary Wharf, I mean. The massacre. But we were all so full of what we were doing. So certain we had it all under control. You, taught me just how stupid that idea was, Sir. We've got nothing under control, do we? Just little fish trying to stay out of the shark's teeth."
Snickering, Ianto rolled his head on his arms. "You have such a pretty smile for a shark, Sir."
^^^
A tinge of a blush rose up in Ianto's cheeks, visible even him the special lighting that allowed jack to keep watch on his prisoner and he whispered. "God, I hope you didn't hear that. More fool, me, getting hung up on the boss. You don't play fair, Sir. You and those bleeding pheromones."
^^^
Jack's eyes lit with a new interest, a new hope. "Keep talking, boy. Tell me what you know I need to hear. Come on. Talk it all out."
^^^^
"I found Lisa, Sir. In mid-conversion. I thought she was dead, but then she opened her eyes and looked at me. For a minute, one brief wonderful minute, she recognized me. She smiled, Sir, and it was so breath-taking. Then the pain hit her. Hard...Oh my god, I can't tell you the pain that was in her beautiful eyes. " He was rocked by a violent shudder. "I would have died for her right at that moment. That feeling never went away. Not for all the months it took to get to here. I...got her out. Hid her." He snorted bitterly. "Pumped more drugs into her than an elephant could survive, and still she screamed. Screamed and screamed."
He tipped his head back, revealing the silvery wash of tears flowing over his pallid cheeks. "Oh, God. What was I supposed to do? What could I do, Sir? Leave her like that? I love her. Loved...her..." He shook his head, looking for all intents, a lost child searching for a comforting hand.
"I did what I had to do." His head dropped back onto his arms. "I searched you out. You have no idea how terrified I was when I realized you weren't going to hire me on. I would have done anything. Anything to get inside the Torchwood team. I had to. For Lisa. It was the only chance I had to cure her." Another bark of bitter laughter burst from him. "That worked out well, though, didn't it? " He rolled his head on his arms. "Lisa."
A shuddering sob shook his lean frame. "I couldn't believe you were right, Sir. You have to know that. I needed to save her. Needed too....but it wasn't her, was it? I helped her and she killed....All that blood. It belongs to me. As sure as I ended their lives myself. I don't know if I can live with that. But then I don't have to, do I? You told me. You'll execute me when you're done with me here. I know you will. I saw the deadly seriousness when you told me to kill her." Lifting his head and letting it fall back against the hard stone, he sniffed back his tears. "I did try, Sir. But...It was Lisa....Lisa...."
^^^^
"Lisa..." Jack's fist clenched as his temper soared. "Always Lisa...."
^^^^
"Getting Lisa and the cyber equipment into the hub was so easy once I got you to hire me. Hell, you put me in charge of over-seeing the end of the salvage operation. So simple to add a few crates and store them in the lower levels." Ianto laughed bitterly. "Getting myself in, that was the hard part."
^^^
Jack nodded, remembering his reluctance to bring the attractive man into the fold. Even then he'd known his own desires toward Ianto Jones was going to lead to trouble. Finding himself sprawled on the younger man's body, feeling Ianto's hard flesh quickening to the contact that had had to hurt had done him in.
^^^^
"Sir?" Ianto's face was bleak, his eyes dim and lifeless. "Sir...I don't know what else to say. I don't know what you want me to tell you. Only thing I can do is try to tell you how sorry I am I disappointed you. I thought I could do anything for Lisa. Lie and cheat anyone. But you, Sir....Losing your trust is killing me. I won't ask you to forgive me. I doubt ou could, or would if you could. I ...used the attraction I felt for you to manipulate your faith in me. No one can forgive that. And I'm so sorry." He closed his eyes tiredly. "Could we end this now. I'm ready."
Into fell silent for several long minutes. The with a sigh, he added, "The Tourist Center is pretty clear cut. Anyone of you can man it without any trouble. I set up an inventory file of supplies, contacts and all that on the computer. Pretty self-explanatory. You could make a thriving base there, you know? If someone wanted to go to the trouble...Or had the time." He let go a short humorless laugh. "I was able to get most of the artifacts and office files uploaded to the computer there as well. Just have Tosh download it to her station and she can finish up giving the rest of you access. And...that's it, Sir." He curled up n the clod floor, not even bothering to cushion he head. "Whenever you're ready." he smiled sadly as a tear slipped from his closed eyes. "I ...love you, sir. I'm sorry...."
^^^
"So am I." Jack reached out and shut down the feed from the cells. "So am I..."
^^^^
The hiss of gas whispered in the air.
Ianto smiled softly. "Thank you, Sir." He drew a breath breath, tasting the sweetness of the gas on his tongue. "Thank you."
