It's been over a month since school started and Kira still hasn't made any friends. The kind of friends she could sit with at lunch, that is. She recognized plenty of people and said hi to some in the corridors but it wasn't the same.
She missed having people to talk to about small things. Like the string of animal attacks everyone was talking about. Kira wasn't too interested in the topic (well, she felt sad for the mutilated and dead people) but still, talking about it would mean she actually had friends. At least then she could tell people about the coyote she saw at the preserve last weekend and how it seemed to follow her back to the car. How sad was that?
She made her way to her dad's classroom, her fingers tapping out a rhythm on the cover of the textbook she had clenched protectively in front of her chest. As she entered the classroom, she noticed her dad was talking to one of his students, a tall, slender brunette that Kira vaguely remembered passing in the halls before. Her dad noticed her and gestured for her to wait by the door. Kira took in the classroom décor as she let the sounds of her dad and the girl talking fade into the background.
"Kira." Her dad calling her name brought her back from her thoughts. She smiled sheepishly and glanced at the girl who was gathering her things.
"Hi, dad. Had a good day?" She went up to his desk, her textbook still held firmly in front of her.
"I did. How about you? Did you make any friends?" He asked, his eyes flitting over her as he packed his things into a bag.
Kira groaned internally and hoped the girl couldn't hear them. Her dad didn't like it when she switched to ASL when they were in the company of people who didn't speak it, so she didn't sign him her answer. It was tempting, though.
"No, I didn't. It's hard making friends, dad, I can't find a topic that would let me talk to people." She shrugged her shoulders and bit her lip briefly.
"So does that mean no dating this year?" He turned away from her to grab his jacket and Kira didn't even try to hold in the eyeroll.
"Nope. No one's interested in me. Aside from that coyote who followed me at the preserve."
"Well, maybe you could date the coyote," her dad deadpanned.
"Ha-ha, very funny, dad." She rolled her eyes again because really. And people were wondering where she got her sense of humour from.
