A couple weeks have gone by since the bonfire rally and somehow, miraculously, Charlotte was still managing to pull off Libby's day job. She wouldn't say she was doing a spectacular job at it, but at least she was there day in and day out and she was going through the motions. Or more accurately, what she assumed to the best of her abilities were the motions, since she still wasn't entirely sure what it was she was even supposed to be doing.
Most of the students were flipping out about their college application process these days. At least with that, she was able to tap into Libby's knowledge of how to Google and figure out how to get envelopes full of materials sent off to wherever they were supposed to go. People also came by to cry about the Hales who died in that fire on Halloween night. Charlotte wasn't sure what she was supposed to say about that, so she sat there while teenagers vent their feelings and bawled their eyes out. When they were done, she handed over the box of Kleenex, smiled in what she hoped resembled a sympathetic smile, patted their hand and sent them back to class with encouragement to drop off donation goods into the box by the door on their way out because that's what the principal said they should do.
At least Libby's wardrobe has gotten an upgrade since the night of the bonfire. And that guy Caleb finally texted her back. That was a bust. Between Libby's boyfriend freaking and running off on her and now this, Charlotte was starting to envy that woman who started the house fire. Her success rate was phenomenal. At least everything she was doing was fun regardless of degree of success. And better yet, every little thing was causing more complications for Libby's life, which wasn't exactly a bad thing.
What did bog her down, try as she might to push it out of her mind, was the large tree stump in the forest. She knew it had something to do with how she was finally able to escape and inhabit her twin sister's body, but she didn't understand how it happened. And that warranted further investigation.
One positive thing about the fire was that it took the place of the public worry about the supposed animal attacks she's heard so much about around town. Therefore, Charlotte thought nothing of dressing up in jogging gear and heading out to the Preserve for a closer look. Of course, what she wore, though pieced together from items Libby owned, was nothing like what the other twin would throw together. It took a while to make her way to the tree stump when guided only by fuzzy, confusing memories from the Other Side. When she stepped into the clearing, she noticed that someone was already there. That someone was bustling around with lots of fancy looking equipment. While she wasn't exactly trying to be sneaky, Charlotte froze when she stepped on the twig and snapped it loudly in the relative silence.
