Maria gave a shrug, nonplussed. "Suit yourself." She uncapped the flask and took a slug of the contents herself. Then she closed it up and tucked it back into her pocket.
Her coyote eyes were quick to pick up on any movements, however minute they were in the dark. That included the quirk of his eyebrow. She read the confusion easily enough.
"Don't worry, mine was a compliment, too," Maria reassured him. She grinned, all teeth. "So I'm guessing you're not the Spanish teacher." Although, to be fair, unless he was familiar with Mexican slang, she wouldn't assume any random Spanish speaker would know the term she used. "That was chulo," she said with slightly more emphasis in her pronunciation. "Not cholo, which is a whole other thing. And rude. Chulo, think of it as..." She tilted her head to the head thoughtfully, trying to come up with a way to explain. "It's similar to guapo, if you know that one." It was at least more commonly understood.
