All her life Erica had felt like the ugly duckling. Only recently had that changed, and with said change the world had opened up to her in a way it never had when she’d been uglier and carried more weight on her body, along with unsightly acne that was hard to cover up even with make-up. Not that she’d bothered making the effort usually. But now she was the furthest from an ugly duckling that she could be, and a newfound confidence that meant she was more than happy to show the entire world the new her. And showing off the new and improved Erica had meant buying clothes perfectly designed to do just that. Clothes exactly like the low-cut top and very tight jeans she was wearing to meet Jackson.
While she would have liked to say there was no nervousness fluttering around her, Erica couldn’t. She had years of insecurity that was no simmering beneath the surface, a little voice in her head that told her boys like Jackson didn’t meet girls like her. Sure, she could glance into the reflective surface of the storefront window she was waiting by and reassure herself she looked damn good, but it was hard to fully push away a life’s worth of experience in knowing that the only attention she got from good looking jocks was when they were making fun of her. But that was a voice she wasn’t going to listen to, and Erica made a concerted effort to push it away as she waited.
This was the start to a new life for her, and that meant getting what she wanted. Which was to finally have someone give her the kind of attention she’d never had but had craved for years. Jackson wasn’t someone she wanted to actually date. It was more of a test to see if she could actually get the guy every girl in school wanted. The kind of guy who typically only went for the Lydia Martins of the world. Part of felt that if she get him to pay attention to her, to maybe even be really interested in her, that it would prove something. That he’d actually agreed to come meet her was a start. Now all she needed was for him to actually show up.
