Probably moreso than Coach Finstock, Jackson dreaded lacrosse tryouts. As the team captain, he keeps himself very involved in who becomes part of the team and this time of year, everyone seemed to think trying out would be fun. Except it usually turned into a colossal waste of time and only a few people really ended up getting picked for the team. Always picky, Jackson really only wanted the best of the students who came to tryout day to join to increase their chances of winning, but Coach Finstock, who had the ultimate say, didn't seem to feel the way Jackson did. He did pick McCall and Stilinski after all, though Scott had gotten a lot better right out of the blue. That bothered Jackson on a whole other level, especially since it felt like McCall was somehow surpassing him without even really trying and he couldn't figure out how that was possible. He'd be lying if he didn't say it kept him up at night. Refocusing his attention, he looked over the field full of potential recruits and witnessed someone trip over nothing and someone else fail to hurl the ball any further than maybe two feet. This year's tryouts weren't looking all that good. Sighing, he adjusted the padding under his jersey as he prepared for another student to attempt to score past him. Again, they missed and were tackled to the ground by a Jackson Whittemore who was steadily losing his patience. The guy got up and slinked off without really saying anything and Jackson just brushed off his jersey as he looked for the next person who decided to attempt to show what they were made of. Annoyingly, a few people just backed off or turned away as if they didn't realise it was one of their turns. None of these people would be able to handle a real game if they couldn't handle tryouts and with Jackson's luck, these were the kind of players Coach would sign up. Ugh. Just then, Jackson caught an unfamiliar sight on the field. In all the years he'd been a part of lacrosse, not a single girl had come to tryout day and not for any real rule against it. Most of the girls weren't the type to play lacrosse, especially considering that the majority of the teams in the area were all male meaning if they got tackled, they were more likely to get hurt than anyone else. Well, anyone else except maybe Stilinski. Jackson recognised the girl as one of the new students, but he didn't really know that much about her. He'd seen her a few times around the halls and in classes, but other than that, he had no real interaction with her. "You're up," he called to her, hoping she would either surprise him or fall fall enough on her face that he could find some amusement in this waste of a day. |
