Sleepless nights have a way of catching up with people. Some of those ways were easy to disguise while others proved much more difficult. Dark circles, bags under the eyes? No problem. A little cover-up, draw attention to another part of the face, and there you go, issue solved. Constant yawning and twitching? Definitely not easy to mask. Especially not when practicing something that required steady hands and a sure heart, like target practice. So Allison had been skipping those, going for long runs or practicing yoga instead of her usual archery practice out in the Preserve. She'd hoped it would help her sleep, tire her out so much that she'd fall into bed. And it did work, for a few hours, until she'd wake up, heart racing and sweat pouring down her face, the ghost of the omega looming over her bed, the small huntress and wolf figurine she had purchased from one of the shops in downtown Beacon Hills and stuck on her dresser glinting oddly in the light from the windows.
It had been a sleepless month for Allison.
But the most recent conversation with her aunt had made it almost tolerable. Kate was someone she could talk to, someone who would understand her worries and not judge her, and someone who would provide reassurance. Someone not her parents. It had been a relief to know Kate was coming down and she'd slept a little easier. Not entirely great, but better, and managed to get enough sleep to keep her going. Anyone who knew her well could still see the signs, but Allison managed to avoid her parents for the most part and Angel was dealing with her own feelings about the situation.
All Saturday she'd been on tenterhooks, waiting for Kate to arrive, then dealing with the usual catch-up, and it wasn't until after 12 that Allison was able to escape with her aunt, citing the truth: she and Kate were going to chit-chat.
The restaurant was some random place, not too crowded that they needed to worry about being overheard, and once the waiter had taken their orders, Allison turned to her aunt.
"Did Dad tell you about the animal attacks here?" she asked softly.
