Stacey's Birthday Makeover! magic_days verse
Who: Stacey and Parvati
Where: Parvati's room?
When: October, 1995
Why: Because Parvati has a present for Stacey. magic_oasis ftw!
People like Romilda Vane might find it odd that someone like Stacey, now fourteen years old, wasn't particularly concerned about her appearance. Well, she did have some of the adolescent insecurities - she wished she was taller (4'11", at her age, really? Loads of first years were already taller than her!) and curvier (she wore a bra just because she would feel weird being the only one not out of her roommates, not because she particularly needed one), but in comparison to that, the fact that her face was nothing special wasn't much of an issue. She had pretty blue eyes, and most people focused on her red hair, anyway.
So she was actually a bit nervous about Parvati giving her a make-over. Not that she thought Parvati would do a bad job, of course, but she and Parvati just looked so different in general, and Stacey was pretty sure she couldn't pull off some of the beauty tricks the Gryffindor pulled off so effortlessly.
Surely if she looked ridiculous she'd be able to go back to normal? Not that Parvati would make her look ridiculous.
Stacey crossed her arms over her chest and struggled not to bounce nervously as she waited for the older girl.
"So did you have a good birthday?" Parvati asked, as she sorted through her masses of make up supplies. Often she'd just use charms to do her make up but make overs were more fun with actual make up.
She looked through her foundations, realising that all of them were way too dark for Stacey's skin. She squeezed a little of the lightest one onto the back of her hand then used a quick spell to change the colour. "Can I see your hand please?" she asked, dabbing a little on her finger so she could rub it into Stacey's hand and see if it were the right colour now.
The curse of the pale, Irish skin she'd inherited from her grandma Fairchild. Stacey certainly wouldn't have minded being a little darker like Parvati, if only because she would burn that much less in the sun.
Tentatively, she held out her hand to allow Parvati to colour test on her.
"It was a good birthday," she said, "My roommates got me a cake and everything. I'm the oldest in my dorm, see, and so since my birthday's first no-one's tired of them yet."
She rubbed a little in then adjusted the colour slightly. "That sounds really nice." Parvati said as she applied the foundation to her face. "I'm just using a light weight foundation" she explained "Because since you don't wear make up much you probably won't like the feel of it very much."
After that was done she charmed the powder to the same colour then powdered Stacey's face to stop shine. "What kind of cake was it?" she asked as she began rummaging through her make up for the other things she'd need.
She didn't really. The liquidy foundation felt awkward on her skin, and she wasn't sure how that could manage to look natural and not like a clown.
"Chocolate with white frosting," she replied, "I guess they left a note out for the house-elves to find so they could make it. It was really quite nice of them.
"When is your birthday, Parvati?"
"Yum!" Parvati thought that cake sounded delicious. "Maybe I should suggest my friends leave a note for the house-elves too. Although I'd have to make sure Hermione didn't hear me. She has issues with house-elves or something." Parvati shrugged. She never really payed attention to what Hermione said, it usually made little sense to her anyway.
"March 18th." she replied as she brushed a little blush on Stacey's cheeks. She then picked up her eyeliner, in grey so that it wasn't too dark and obvious. "This can feel a bit uncomfortable on your eyes so sorry." she apologised in advance. When she'd first started using make up, eye liner had always been her least favourite to apply but she'd gotten better at applying it and had gotten used to putting it on so she didn't mind so much anymore. "I'll only do the bottom because if you do both it makes your eyes look really squinty. Kind of like Romilda's." she grinned. "Then I'll put a little white at the corner of your eyes to make them look wider and sparklier."
"Didn't she start some weird group to free house-elves?" Stacey asked, "I remember her asking me to buy a badge last year, and I don't think she even knew who I was." Of course, the second year Stacey had been completely confused by the request, having only known Hermione by reputation as the smartest witch in the school.
Parvati would have had trouble putting the eyeliner on Stacey's eyes because everytime the applicator got close to her eyes, she flinched and blinked. Foreign objects weren't supposed to go by one's eyes after all.
"I don't think Romilda would like you saying that her eyes are squinty," Stacey mused.
"Yeah. It had some gross name like vomit or something." Parvati remembered. "She tried to get me a badge too but I said it didn't go with my outfit so she left me alone." she smiled. "Mentioning fashion is the best way to get Hermione to stop talking."
Parvati was having trouble with the eyeliner so she picked up her wand again and charmed the eyeliner on. "Sorry about that." she said. "You do get used to it eventually." She picked up a huge palette of eye shadow and tried to decide what colour to use. People said that using contrasting colours made the eyes stand out more and for Stacey this meant using orange eyeshadow but Parvati didn't think this was a good idea for multiple reasons. One being that orange wasn't really a natural colour for a minimal make up look, another being that Parvati didn't really like orange make up in general and the third being that it might make Stacey look a little too orange, especially with the red hair. She sighed and looked at all the other colours. Blue might look a bit tacky so that was out too. Eventually she settled on a white which would just blend ito the eye lids and make them look glittery without really showing much colour. "Close your eyes" she instructed as she applied the eye shadow to the brush.
"Romilda's eyes are squinty." she added, "And she called me a whore when I tried to help her make her eyes look better."
"I think it began with an 'S',"" Stacey mused, "Spit? Something like that, yeah. I didn't completely understand what it was all about.
The eyeshadow was a bit easier to take what with having her eyes closed and not being able to see it coming. She also really, really doubted that something like eyeliner was something she'd be able to get used to, and she was kind of glad she had good enough eyesight not to need glasses or contact lenses - because she wasn't sure she'd be able to get the latter in her eyes as well.
"That wasn't very nice of her," Stacey said in reply to the comment about Romilda, "I think sometimes Romilda tries to act more grown up than she really is, but it doesn't really work because then she just sounds silly when she tries to use grown up insults that don't suit. And she probably does wear too much eye make-up and she probably should have listened to you because you just know so much more about make-up than she does, but I still don't think they look squinty. Then again, I know even less about make-up and beauty and fashion than she does, so I'm probably not the best person to give an opinion on that.
"Yeah, something like that. I don't think anyone really understood what it was all about. Did anyone actually join the group?" Parvati said as she finished up Stacey's eyes.
"You can open your eyes again now." she told Stacey as she picked up her mascara. "Sometimes I like Romilda, other times she's really annoying and I really don't see what her obsession with Harry is about. He's not that special," she rolled her eyes again. "If she doesn't want to take my advice that's her problem though. Who knows, maybe Harry likes girls with squinty eyes anyway." she laughed and finished up applying the mascara.
"Almost done. I'll just put some lip gloss on you. Did you want your hair done too?"
To Stacey's credit, somehow she managed to hold still all right for the mascara, even though she still really, really did not like those make-up objects going near to her eyes. "I'm not sure," Stacey said, "I gave her a couple sickles, but I told her I didn't have enough time for another club but to let me know if she ever needed help with something. There was something about knitting, but I can't knit at all, so, that was pretty much the end of that."
Stacey was glad to be almost done and she considered Parvati's question. She may as well go with the whole thing, shouldn't she? And having her hair done wouldn't be near as bad as dealing with eyeliner.
"All right. You can do my hair as well if you'd like."
"Great!" Parvati exclaimed happily. She really enjoyed giving makeovers. She applied a light pink lip gloss and then quickly packed her make up up and picked up a hairbrush and her wand.
"Oh yeah, the knitting. She'd stay up late knitting. It drove me crazy! Thank Merlin for silencing charms! Clicking knitting needles are annoying when trying to get to sleep. Some of do actually care about our beauty sleep."
She moved round to he back of Stacey and gently undid her hair and started to run the brush through it. "How do you feel about some nice waves?" she asked after considering what to do for a while.
"Nora says Hermione Granger is part robot. I'm not sure I believe her, but it is kind of insane how she can stay up late, get very little sleep and still manage to make as good of marks as she does," Stacey replied, "I couldn't function without any sleep!"
Stacey liked having her hair brushed - it reminded her of being a small child and her mum gently brushing her hair before plaiting it or sticking it in pigtails so it would be out of her face while she and sam played. Her mum had always said she loved Stacey's hair and was glad her daughter was a redhead like her father rather than a brunette like her mother.
"I'm not opposed to waves," Stacey told Parvati, "I don't know if my hair will be or not, though. It tends to resist being curled - that's why I wear it straight all the time. Well, that and being too lazy to try and make it fancy most days." Pulling her shoulder length hair in a ponytail was pretty much the most practical way to wear it - especially on days when she had Potions!
"I wouldn't be surprised if she was part robot." Parvati commented with a smile. She put the brush down and picked up her wand again.
"I'll just have to use a really strong charm to get it to stay in." she said. "It'll stay in until you wash your hair or reverse the charm." she said the charm and waved her wand around a bit. "There we go!" she said happily after a minute or two. "Your hair looks lovely curled. You should go look in a mirror."
Well, she didn't have to tell Stacey twice! Stacey got up off the bed to look herself over in the mirror on the wall She thought she looked quite grown-up, actually! And her hair did look nice in curls! Still, this was too much work for an everyday thing, and Stacey wasn't used to seeing herself prettied up like this.
"Thank you, Parvati," she said, "I look lovely."
"You do!" Parvati agreed, proud of her work. "Happy Birthday." she smiled at Stacey. "If you ever want another make over, you know where to come." Paravti really enjoyed doing this and the end result was so great to see. "Now you should go show Romilda and show her how much more grown up you are than her!"
"Heh, I may have to," Stacey said with a grin.
