RP Thread: Landon and Frank
11-13-2007 RP: Frank Longbottom and Landon Aubrey
Characters: Frank and Landon
When: Evening
Where: At the bottom of the stairs, then onward!
Rating: TBA
Summary: Much needed mate time.
Landon sat on the bottom step, patting the freshly rolled cigarettes in his front jacket pocket with his fingers idly. He'd been jutty and nervous all day, like some paranoid thing, and it annoyed him. He didn't know why. Frank was probably right; he just needed some fresh air and to talk to someone who wasn't himself or Meg, and he wouldn't really talk to Meg anyway, at least not now.
And he had no idea where, if anywhere, that was going.
Tired of twitching where he sat, Landon chanced a look around to see if any prefects of teachers were lurking about (he really didn't need to lose more points or get another detention). Satisfied that no one else was around he went over to the door and cracked it open, picking out a fag and lighting it, closing his jacket and reaching for his hat as he inhaled thankfully.
Christ he was such an addict.
Frank stopped at the top of the stairs and watched his friend for a moment before heading down to greet him.
"Five points from Ravenclaw," he teased, bumping him on the shoulder. "Now let's get out of the castle before any one sees you to take some real points," he said, pushing past Landon to step outside. He had no idea where they would go, only that it was pretty clear Landon needed to talk, and Frank was more than willing to listen to anything his best mate had to say.
What he'd written to Fee had been true, it was easy to be jealous of a friend with a significant other, but in Landon's case, Frank didn't envy him. He seemed to be getting the crap kicked out of him by love.
They'd walked across the bridge before Frank spoke again as he stopped to look over the ravine.
"So what's up, mukker," he said, adopting his friend's slang playfully.
Landon smiled slightly, tugging his toque down over his ears before shoving his other hand in his pocket and inhaling again. Blowing the smoke into the cold November air he said, "What's not, seems like. Made a bit of a mess. Yeh know I started datin' Daisy, an' then after Meg streaked fer that bet we had this conversation and it pissed me off so I got pissed be meself in the loo." Landon sighed.
"Kind of told Meg that I was really in love with her while I was drunk, and we talked about it, I guess an' she can't tell me how she really feels until I break up with Daisy, but I can't break up wit Daisy, but I can't break up with Daisy an' crush her heart into a million pieces without knowin' that Meg real serious."
Thinking about it brought up all the frustrations he'd been repressing for the majority of the day. He took another shaky inhale of his cigarette and winced, looking at Frank. "S'pathetic. Makes me sick'n tired and sends me in circles an' I dun know what teh do wit meself."
"Well, you're right about one thing, it's a mess," Frank agreed, "Though I guess that's not so helpful really, is it?"
He took a deep breath of the chilled air and let it out slowly, his breath appearing just as smokey as the cigarettes Landon was exhaling.
"But if you knew Meg was serious would you break things off with Daisy?" Frank asked. "I don't particularly want in the middle of things, but Meghan and I are having breakfast together tomorrow and I could ask," he offered.
"If it was goin' teh real serious, aye," Landon said tiredly. "But I mean, she broke up wit me in the first place. She's probaby afraid o'me hurtin' her, and a'm afraid o'her hurtin' me too. An' I mean, Daisy's 15! I like her, an' I think we could be good together, but couldn't Meg an I be better? I jus want someone teh tell me what the right thing teh do is..." Landon took a deep breath. "If I can't figure it out maybe I oughta stay away from birds altogether."
"You think you could?" Frank asked. "I figure I'm about to get royally shot down by Alice tomorrow but I was sort of thinking about asking her out," he said. "I know it's not the time to bring it up, but from your perspective, you ought to be able to spot a massive mistake, yeah?" he asked.
He shook his head. "Merlin, I'm sorry, I was just busting to tell someone, and that didn't come out right. Back to the Meghan and Daisy thing, before you do anything else, you need to figure out which one like you more. If you like Meghan more, it doesn't matter how she feels back, it pretty much proves that Daisy isn't the right one, yeah? And if you like Daisy more than it doesn't matter how Meghan feels. You can't choose who to date based on who's more of a sure thing."
Landon laughed. "Mistakes've been followin' me around like stray pups s'far this term," he said, finishing his cigarette and tossing the butt on the ground, putting it out with the heel of his boot. "An' dun be sorry. I think yeh should go fer it. Can't see why Alice wouldn't say yes. Dun think you two could have less lingerin' questions and doubts, trust me..."
"An I dun think it's a matter of feelings s'much as a question of hurtin' people. No matter what I do a'm gonna hurt someone, ain't I? But, ah. I love Meg. A've missed her s'bloody much. S'ridiculous."
Frank nodded. "Someone's going to get hurt, there's no way around it. Not unless you can find someone else that Daisy might like more than you and toss her at him," he said. "But that might only work in books and muggle movies," he added.
"Sorry my suggestions don't really help and all I can really do is listen," Frank sighed. "But if I was any kind of expert I'd have my self sorted out by now you'd think. At least once we're out of Hogwarts and living in our own flat some of these problems will seem a bit less overwhelming. I mean, Daisy and Alice will both be in school and Meg will be off touring with a Quidditch team. It's gonna be love by correspondance for the both of us."
"Listening is better'n me talkin' teh meself and slowly goin' around the bend. School can be suffocatin' sometimes, aye? It'll be guid teh take advantage of some real independence. Even if it's only gettin' pissed and not gettin' detention fer it." Landon paused. "Which was a lil more'n stupid, but I spose I can't be smart all the time."
"A'm jus' afraid that breakin' it off wit Daisy now is goin' teh be... so bad. Jus unbelievably bad. She's goin' teh hate me."
"Well, Daisy's a smart girl," Frank said. "Maybe you can give it a bit of time, be patient?" he asked. "If Meghan loves you, that's worth sticking around for. I don't think you're going to lose her in the next month anyway. Get to know Daisy better, let her get to know you, and she might figure it out all on her own," he said, turning back around to look up at the school and shivering.
"It'll be fantastic to live on our own. Just once I'd like to be in a room with Alice without the possibility of a flock of firsties barging through the door," he sighed. "And not cause I have any intention of trying anything, just cause it'd be nice to get a decent look at her, or to have a conversation that lasts more than five minutes."
Landon nodded absently. "I dunno if Meg'll see it that way though," he muttered.
"Yeh know, there's nothin' wrong with wantin' teh get teh that point eventually," Landon said. "I mean, I know what yeh mean about findin' places away from other people, but I spose the faculty didn't really intend fer us all teh be goin' off and snogging and shaggin' and havin' a real need fer private conversation."
Frank nodded. "Well, when I say alone, it really is just for chatting... I'm not so sure about all the other stuff. I mean, I'd want to and all, but I really don't want to mess everything up, and when I think about Alice that way, it all seems like it would go to hell in a handbasket, and--"
Frank cut himself off. "And I talk entirely too much," he laughed.
"But if you want my honest opinion it sounds to me like you've already sorted most of this out. It sounds like you like Meg more, and if it's true, then you don't need me to tell you what to do."
"Yeah, I know," Landon agreed, and Frank was right. If Meg was the priority in his thoughts, and who he wanted to spend most of his time with... Perhaps it was time to stop agonizing and do something about it instead.
"And if it's meant to work out that way with Alice, mukker, it will, I wouldn't worry," Landon told his friend practically. "It's like anything, aye? All seems ridiculous and overwhelming until you do it. And er. Pun unintended."
