Damocles & Shan
11-13-2007 RP: Damocles Belby and Shannon Ryskamp
Who: Damocles and Shannon
What: Procrastinating in the library.
When: Tuesday, lunch
Where: Library
Damocles wouldn't normally be spending lunchtime doing homework, but having been quite impressed by Professor Yoxall's performance during detention, however, he had procrastinated on his History of Magic essay. Dam had been banking on the possibility that Professor Binns' demise would occur before the sixth-years' lesson, and in the confusion and the grief and so on, no one would think to collect the assignments. Well, either that, or there was also the possibility that Ravenclaw Tower would combust from its near-constant state of tension, anxiety, and misery, in which case no one had to worry about such trivial concerns as homework.
But Tuesday arrived, and it turned out that life went on, for both Ravenclaws and for Binns, who by all accounts was just as alive as he always was. While that certainly wasn't saying much, it did mean that Damocles had an essay to finish.
He had spent the morning working, more or less, and by noon, he was both a little hungry and more than ready for distraction. Flipping through one of his oft-neglected textbooks, he found folded among the pages some forgotten and half-finished paper airplane design. By the looks of it, it must have been based on some bird he had once been studying in Care of Magical Creatures. Eager to push aside his essay, he pounced on the project before him, straightening corners and re-bending folds until the paper once again resembled a sort of birdlike projectile.
Dam rocked his chair back, managing the precarious balance with only a little difficulty, and launched his creation forward. It crashed to the table with little fanfare. "Must have been a Diricrawl," he announced out loud, then took a guilty look around to see if anyone had been paying attention.
Shannon wasn't hungry on that Tuesday. She had only had one class, Defense Against the Dark Arts, earlier that day. Shannon didn't want to think about everything that was bothering her, and wanted to just focus on her homework, not that there was too much at the moment. 6th year was actually harder than she thought it would have been, but she could handle it. The library was her place of choice today. Anyone could find her there, if they were looking, instead of hiding someplace where no one could find her. Plus, the library didn't see as many students during the lunch hour as the Great Hall did.
She entered the library, her bag swinging by her side, and her arms were full of the textbooks she had brought with her. Shannon picked an empty table not too far from Damocles, without noticing him at first. She set her books down and moved them around, trying to find the book she wanted to use for her work at that time. As she read from the book, Shannon started twirling her hair, something she hardly ever did. It gave her something to do while she tried to concentrate. It was when Damocles had said something out loud, that Shannon looked up and took in her surroundings.
"You're loud," Shannon said.
"I try," he said, giving Shannon a grin. Loudness was one of the many reasons why Damocles was neither a favourite of Madame Pince's nor a frequent frequenter of the library. He reached for his failed aircraft and began tweaking its design, a highly scientific process that involved randomly refolding and tearing the bird/plane's wings in two. This was by far better than finishing his work, and besides, there was still the chance poor, poor Professor Binns would meet an untimely death before he got around to marking Dam's essay. He leaned back in his chair again, trying to see what Shannon was doing. "What're you reading?" he asked, trying to keep his voice somewhat low.
Shannon smirked a little. "I'm surprised you're in the library," Shan said. "Madame Pince hasn't told you to leave yet?" She was used to him being loud, but that wasn't going to stop her from stating the obvious. She watched for a moment as he fiddled with whatever it was that he was working on. "What are you doing?" She asked. She couldn't quite tell what he was making. When he asked what she was reading, Shannon couldn't tell him without glancing at the book. It wasn't as though she tried to forget what she was reading, her mind was a little preoccupied to be taking in all the information. Besides, she had just be skimming over words, committing to memory a word here and there. "Um..." Shannon closed the book. It was her Charms book. She hadn't realized that the book that she had picked was that book. "Charms, apparently." She answered, "I suppose I don't really want to do any homework."
Damocles chanced a quick, furtive look over his shoulder, slightly concerned that just by invoking the name of Pince, the librarian would suddenly spring up behind him. "I've been hard at work for a long time," he said, pointing to the History of Magic textbook and essay that were clearly going ignored. "And I'm still hard at work, but this time with making the world's greatest...aero-avian-creation." He brushed aside his inability to smoothly make up words, and instead looked over with interest as Shannon had to figure out what book she was reading.
"Yeah, I don't want to do homework either." He gestured to one of the empty chairs at Shan's table. If she wasn't in the mood for homework, who would he be to return to his own? "Mind if I join you?" Dam raised an eyebrow. "I'll try to keep the volume down."
Shannon laughed quietly. She didn't want Pince to come over and tell them to leave. Though, it would have been a little fun if she had. "Right..." Shannon said with a bit of sarcasm. "You haven't perfected it yet? The bird-plane combo must be something truly amazing."
"You've got your creation to worry about. So homework, at a time like this, is completely pointless and a little useless," Shannon let out a sigh. She wasn't going to get any work done. She might as well give up on that task for a later time. Besides, she had plenty of time to finish her homework before it was due. "You can join me, I don't mind one bit." Shannon whispered, "I'll make sure you keep the volume down."
"Nah, it's yet to be perfected. Like the best things in life, this Frankenstein...Frankenplane here is a work in progress." Holding up his aircraft, he squinted at it with a critical eye before giving it an experimental throw. It landed slightly further away this time, but clearly, if Damocles was truly serious about getting his creation off the ground, he'd have to rely on Charms or at least some knowledge of commonly accepted principles of aerodynamics.
He scooped up his books, his essay, and his failure of an aircraft, and joined Shannon at her table, trying to keep his noise to a minimum. "Homework's completely pointless and useless at a time like this," he agreed cheerfully, quite pleased to have company after spending the morning working alone. "Actually, to be fair, homework tends to be pointless and useless anyway. Is it just me, or has the workload been incredibly ridiculous this year?"
"Frankenplane is a nice name for your work in progress," Shannon said. She had heard of Frankenstein, but had never, like with almost all Muggle literature, read the book. "I'm sure it'll be amazing once you complete it. And if you want it to fly under its own power," Shannon said as she held up her Charms book. "You can use this. I'm sure there is such a charm to make it fly." Currently, it didn't seem like it would go any farther than it had. It would have been interesting to see it really fly.
"Yes, it tends to be like that. Homework isn't much of a help," Shannon said. "Though, I think ti does help study sometimes. It's a reinforcement for what I've learned. At least when we get out into the real world, we won't have homework anymore." Shannon knew she wanted to be a Healer. That was her one and only career goal. She had to do well, even if it meant completing useless assignments. "I think it has been. We are not even into our NEWT year yet. I know that this is the start, but still. It's a good thing that we can cut back on classes. I've got about one class every day."
