RP Log: Amelia and Rufus
LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY properbones)
Who: Amelia Bones and Head Auror Rufus Scrimgeour
Where: Scrimgeour's office
When: Thursday 9:30am
Rating: G
Summary: Amelia asked Scrimgeour a question, he became concerned and called her in for a meeting to discuss.
It had already been a long day and it was only 9:30. There had been owls and complaints and tips that led nowhere and now there had been developments, if one could call them that, in the Greer case. It was in the hands of the Minister now, and Rufus had requested an update as soon as it became available. His Aurors were working other leads, on other things; Rufus felt like he was holding his breath waiting for the other shoe to drop.
It was 9:30 and it had been a long day and Amelia Bones was supposed to come over because something was going on. So Rufus paced as he waited, giving instruction to his aide to send Miss Bones in the second she arrived.
If Amelia could have had her way she would have preferred to not leave her desk and venture over into the Auror department. However, as the Head Auror had informed Millicent that Amelia had an appointment with him, she had little choice in the matter. It was either see the Head Auror, or be rebuked by her boss for not attending to her commitments.
As she made her way from where her office was to the Auror department, Amelia made up her mind. With all that was going on at the Ministry itself, it was frivolous to dwell on the situation between her brother and Bellatrix Lestrange. Edgar had asked her to not interfere, and she was trying to hold steadfast to this promise. So as much as she wanted to try and help him, and really bring justice for the acts that had been committed against him, Amelia had to accept that her help was not welcomed. So she resolved to do something that she thought she would never do; she would lie.
When she arrived at Rufus Scrimgeour’s office, she was not made to wait, and instead was guided swiftly through the room full of people and into his office. “Good morning, Head Auror Scrimgeour,” she greeted him offering her hand to engage him in a handshake. “Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to meet with me.”
"Miss Bones," he said cordially, taking her hand and shutting the door behind them. He motioned for her to sit and sat himself not behind his desk as he usually would have done, but in one of the three chairs on the other side of the desk. He looked at Amelia intently, steepling his fingers and looking at her through them.
"Talk to me," he said softly. "Who said what to whom or sent what to whom that has you worrying about how to track an anonymous owl?"
Amelia froze. She was not one to be intimidated easily, but then again it would make sense that the Head Auror should be able to intimidate her; it was his job. But it was her job to maintain a level head and not be intimidated. So she straightened in her chair, mustering all her poise and professionalism, and stared back in an unthreatening manner. “I’m afraid, sir, that even if such a situation existed, the relaying of information regarding to it would be in breach of a severe confidentiality agreement,” she explained calmly. “I apologize if I have wasted your time with this.” She paused. “But hypothetically, can such tracking be implemented?”
"Amelia," he said, his voice low. "Amelia, for Merlin's sake, look at what has been happening. Phelps, Shiver, the little Patil girl in France ... confidentiality matters little when lives are at stake. If there is something that has happened, which I think we both know there is, you can't fight it alone. You or whomever you're protecting. It is not-" his voice rose emphatically on the last word "-a waste of my time, or the time of the Aurors to seek help. Is it confidentiality or are you just afraid? Let me help you, let me protect if there needs to be protecting, investigate where there needs investigation; you go at this alone, Amelia, I don't want to hear about a young a promising woman's career cut short by a tragic and senseless death!" He leaned forward, his voice quieter and a sad look on his face, "It starts small- I've been on this planet long enough to have earned saying that. It starts small. Amelia, please, what is going on?"
She couldn’t tell him. She promised Edgar that she wouldn’t. Her meddling had already caused enough of a riff between them, and she didn’t want to widen it. But all Amelia wanted was to protect him like ha had protected her. And she wanted to protect Matty and Sarah. She knew that telling Rufus would be the right course of action given the situation, but she still felt conflicted. Doing what was right didn’t seem like the best option now. She let out a heavy sigh and said, “I promised not to reveal the identity of the person involved with the event. But it is not myself.”
Rufus stood, "If something happens it is not because the Auror office isn't doing enough." He eyed her carefully, going over to open the door. "I do hope, for your sake as well as mine, Amelia, that it is worth it, keeping the secret. Now, if you please, I have a job to do. Thank you for stopping by."
As Amelia rose from her seat a flood of guilt rushed over her. Here was someone with power, who was capable of helping her, and more importantly Edgar. And here she was not taking it; she was acting just as proud as he was, and it would only lead to disaster. She was going to be the bigger person; she was going to ask for help. The consequence of her losing her brother’s favor was better than him dying. She did not move from where she was standing as she spoke.
“It’s Edgar.”
