what → Remmy broke HannahJo's heart so she's desolate.
when → 6 October, afternoon
where → the greenhouses
warnings → TBD
Last night had been wonderful. Last night she had made posters for the Quidditch game and posted them and then she had sat down to talk to Remus. All she had done was say that she wished they could have spent a little more time together at the ball, and they should spend some time together later to make up for it. And what had he done? He'd gone off and told her that while she was a very pretty, very smart girl, the time wasn't right for him to date anyone!
HannahJo had gone to bed devastated and, upon waking in the morning, skipped breakfast, skipped classes, and instead headed later that afternoon to her greenhouse, where her strawberries were. She had been too upset to even write in her journal and needed to do something. That something ended up being stabbing at her strawberries, likely killing them, as she muttered under her breath.
A leaf fell to the ground from one of the plants and HannahJo kicked at it angrily, "I hate you, Remus Lupin."
Helana never stayed away from the greenhouses for long. So, of course she was going to be heading there on Tuesday afternoon. She liked being around the plants and tending them, even though they weren't like the ones at home and sometimes moved.
When she got to one of the greenhouses, she saw that it wasn't empty, but she didn't mind. It wasn't like she was the only one who could be in the greenhouses, after all. But the other girl looked like she was hurting the plants! That wasn't right! Helana opened the door to the greenhouse and hurried in, letting the door close behind her.
"What are you doing?" she asked, shocked that anyone would want to hurt a plant. And it was HannahJo, who was in some of Helana's classes and Helana thought that HannahJo liked plants.
HannahJo kicked at the ground and shrugged at Hel, "They were dying anyway." Which was sorta true, they had been getting weaker and weaker, but were still salvageable. Stabbing them probably didn't help. She patted at the soil around the plants and shrugged again.
HannahJo loved plants. HannahJo breathed plants and life and air. She would never hurt plants. Ever. Except that had been exactly what she was doing. Still unable to explain herself, she shrugged again, "They were for Rem- Remus and he's not-" she broke off, her eyes lighting up in anger, "I hate him!"
"Why do you hate him?" Helana asked, coming over to look at the poor plants. Even if they were dying they could have been nurtured back to health. Maybe it wasn't totally impossible to still fix them. Right?
And Hel really didn't know much about what was going on at school lately, since she'd been spending more time in the kitchens or just with Harvey since that whole thing where she thought she saw the grim, ignoring the journals because of all the Mean People. So she didn't know about HannahJo and Remus.
"Cos I do," HannahJo said defensively. She moved some more soil around the base of the plants, deciding she'd look at them later because there was no sense in letting a good strawberry go to waste, and besides, she could share them with Aiden for helping her make Quidditch promotion posters. Well, if they didn't die, which they might have done anyway and it was just one more disaster and HannahJo didn't care anymore.
"He doesn't love me," she said finally, softly, feeling stupid for saying it. "And I know it's dumb, ok?"
"Well that's mean of him!" Helana still thought boys were icky, but if HannahJo liked Remus and didn't think he was icky, then he should like her, too! That was how things were supposed to work, wasn't it? "I don't think it's dumb."
"Really?" HannahJo asked softly. "Er, thanks. I just ..." she stamped her foot in aggrivation, "he was supposed to like me! He asked me to the ball and we danced and then Aiden and I got done making posters and I was putting them up and he came up to me and I asked him if we could sit at the game and he said I was a very sweet girl but he wasn't interested in romantics with anyone at all and it wasn't me at all and that's what you say to a girl when you don't like her at all and you want to dumb her and- oh! I just hate him! And I was growing strawberries for him, really, and now I just don't want them anymore and I don't know! It's all just so terrible! I hate him!"
