The Halloween Ball, in Evan's opinion, had been quite a disaster. Not only had he been forced to wear a hideous mask provided by the headmaster when he had gone through all of the trouble to special order one to fit his costume, but as soon as he stepped through the doors of the Great Hall with Tahirah, he was pulled against his will to spend the evening with someone else; it wasn't even a sudden change of his mind. No, it was a physical pull, and as it turned out, it was some insignificant girl that he didn't even know. He thought she might be related to Julienne MacFusty, maybe, who was a prefect in his own House and year, but that was not even remotely comforting to him.
Once ten o'clock rolled around, he had been free to spend the evening with Tahirah, but even so, it was obvious to both that the evening had not gone as planned, or even pleasantly. Now as they were leaving the Great Hall -- generally speaking, the evening was ending, after all -- Evan let out a huff of air.
"That could have been a more pleasant evening."
Tahirah's dress had been sapphire with silver accents, her mask a very pretty silver to accent it. And then Dumbledore had gone and given her some stupid multi-coloured looking one, ruining her outfit. And she didn't get to spent nearly any time with Evan and instead had to spend time dancing with whom she now new was one of the Prewett's. Gideon? Or maybe Fabian, she hadn't stayed that long to find out.
Even at ten, the damper from the first part of the evening still held, and Tahirah was no longer enjoying herself. At the end of the dance, on the way back to the common rooms, when Evan expressed his displeasure, Tahirah was quick to agree.
"Yes, it was a disgusting attempt by Dumbledore to get us to like each other. He ought to have mentioned we wouldn't be needing dates. Well, at least he wasn't someone truly repulsive."
"I think I was with MacFusty's younger sister. It was not my idea of an exciting evening, and when he pitched such a fit about it being required and us needing dates, it's ridiculous that he would do something like that," he said, crinkling his nose a little bit. "Forcing us to spend time together only aggravates us more; it doesn't magically make us fond of each other. If anything, I find the girl even more obnoxious, now."
Brushing invisible lint off of his robes, he opened the heavy door of the Great Hall for Tahirah and followed her through.
"I can say I'm not fond of anyone new," Tahirah said airily, smiling at Evan. "Though I think I was with Gideon and he was Alecto's date, so there was that, at least. No-one too terrible. And whom did you have, dear?"
She wondered if they were dating, her and Evan, but didn't want to say anything.
"You know your roommate, Julienne MacFusty? She's a prefect in our year -- I think I was with her younger sister. A Gryffindor fourth year and not exactly the making of a pleasant evening." Crinkling his nose again, he shook his head. "I suppose I'm glad you were not forced into a terrible situation, but I would have preferred to spend the evening in your company instead."
Tahirah crinkled her nose; she didn't like Julienne very much at all; she liked Julienne's sisters even less. "A fourth year? What is Dumbledore thinking, honestly?"
She smiled sweetly at him, "I would have prefered to spend the evening in your company as well. Perhaps we can do something on our own, later? A ... date of sorts?"
