Log: James and Sirius
LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY insidiousgrim)
Who: James & Sirius
When: Middle of the night, Thursday (technically Friday), directly after leaving Grimmauld Place.
Where: The Potter Household.
What: Sirius shows up at the first place that comes to mind, his best mate's house.
The journey to the Potter household was not a pleasant one. The levitating charm Sirius had gotten away with inside the Black manor wore of rather quickly as he attempted to ride his motorbike there. He wasn't very far from home when he had to land, rather roughly due to the difficultly maneuvering the new bike with his trunk, in a dark abandoned alley. Sirius was livid, at nothing in particular, he was pissed at the world. Having no other real choice in the matter, Sirius hailed the Knight Bus to finish his journey to the Potter household. It made for a bumpy ride, which only soured his already bad mood. He spoke to no one, and sat the entire time with his teeth clenched and fists balled. Bloody fuck why did Regulus have to be such a stubborn pompous git? When he finally arrived at the Potters, some time after midnight, with his entire life in a trunk and motorbike beside him. (That was the benefit of a magic bus, he hadn't needed to leave it behind.) He started tossing pebbles at James's window, hoping he was still awake or, at the very least, would wake at the noise. The Potter house was nearly entirely dark and silent. James's parents were already fast asleep, and James was making his way up to his bedroom to go to sleep himself, if only out of lack of anything better to do. He climbed up the staircase and made his way down the dark hallway. Walking through the Potters' second floor hallway with no light to guide the way may have proved difficult for anyone else, but this was James's house and that simple fact enabled him to cut the corner the led to his bedroom door with no trouble at all. James opened his door to be met by the sound of a faint tapping at the window. He took his wand out to magically turn on his lights, one of the basic spells his parents had given him permission to use at home. He walked over to the window, looked down, and was surprised to find Sirius standing on the ground bellow. James pushed open his window and hung his head out. "What're you doing down there?" James called down to him, a look of confusion on his face that was most likely indecipherable to Sirius from where he stood down on the ground, but the befuddled tone in James's voice made up for the lack of a furrowed brow. Sirius took a deep breath and suppressed his emotions as much as he could. Eventually, he'd explain the story to James... Didn't mean he was that apt to doing so now, nor did he feel like even beginning to divulge in the story standing on the lawn like this. Running a hand through his hair, he looked back up at James, an eyebrow quirked. "Oi, Prongs. Can't you at least invite me in before we start the cycle of inquiring questions and dodging answers?" Though, even in his best attempts to hide his emotions, there was a very evident shakiness to his voice, that anyone who knew Sirius would be able to tell that something was wrong. James frowned as soon as he heard Sirius talk. Instantly, James knew something was wrong just by the sound of Sirius's voice, and the mere fact that Sirius had turned up at his house in the dead of night with what look like his trunk and motorcycle led James to believe there was something very wrong. "Right, well come around the front and I'll let you in," James said and then closed the window and left his room. As he made his way down to the front door, James was careful to walk as quietly past his parents' door as humanly possible. The last thing he needed was for them to wake up, they'd have about a million and one more questions for Sirius than James did, and James thought Sirius probably wasn't in the mood for an interrogation right now. He quickened his pace as soon as he felt he was out of their ear shot and then pulled open the front door for Sirius. Sirius left the motorbike parked in the yard, almost directly beneath James's window. Dragging the heavy trunk behind him, Sirius muttered many curse words, and not entirely directed at the task of dragging the trunk. Finally coming around to the front door, Sirius sighed heavily. This day had started off so promising, and it had taken so many turns for the worse, that he wasn't all that fond of the idea of James's company at the moment. Still, he wouldn't rather be with anyone else in this instance and with downcast eyes he finally muttered, "I.. can't go back there." James took Sirius in with a troubled expression on his face. It was beyond James how Sirius had gone from the great mood he had been in earlier that same day to this, and the answer to that question worried him. James knew something really bad must have happened to his friend. "What?" James questioned and raised his eyebrows. "You mean...you ran away?" James asked. It was a fairly obvious conclusion to reach, or at least it was when Sirius told him that he "can't go back there," anyway. However, James was just so taken aback by the news. James knew that to say Sirius didn't exactly get along with his family was something of an understatement, but he hadn't actually thought he'd ever run away. Sirius nodded, biting the inside of his cheek to keep his anger at bay. He wished, more than anything, that his mum would just drop dead and make the entire world a better place. He didn't want to dwell on it, but the entire situation was making him feel physically sick. "I tried to get Reggie.. Regulus," he corrected himself, "to come with me, but the stupid pompous ignorant prat wouldn't come." There was a certain bitterness in his voice, his eyes seemed to darken with his words. Even if it had seemed odd that Sirius would run away in the first place, and even stranger that he'd admit to begging his brother to come, there was a certain conviction in his voice that even now, as bloody pissed as he could be, Sirius knew he had done what he had to. James frowned and ran a hand through his hair. Sirius may not have gotten along with his parents, but James figured that didn't make running away much easier. "You can stay here as long as you need," James said. "Really, as long as you need to," he offered. "We're not exactly overcrowded." Personally, James wasn't too crazy about Regulus, but he was Sirius's brother and he could imagine it must have hurt when Regulus refused to come. "At least you offered, that was really good of you looking out for him like that," James said. "There's nothing you can do if he won't listen though, some people are just like that." Sirius simply nodded, not feeling like talking much more. "Thanks, James, I didn't know where else to go," he sighed. "Help me get this to your room, will you?" he asked quietly and grabbed one end of it. "Don't mention it," James said and then grabbed the other end of Sirius's trunk and helped him lift it. He carefully hoisted the trunk up the stairs with Sirius, as they neared his parents' room James slowed down a bit and nudged his head in the direction of his parents' room, hoping that Sirius would get the message that that was his parents' room and they'd have to be quiet. With James's help, the two boys carried the trunk as quietly as they could up to James's room. While he could have taken a guest room, Sirius didn't really want to be alone right then. Once inside the room, Sirius sat down on the edge of James's head and buried his head in his hands. This was not the way he imagined the summer to end, and certainly not how he expected to feel now that he was "free" from his family. He didn't really want to admit what he had gone through, but it was one of those things he had to say. He knew James wouldn't say anything; if he was going to tell someone it would be his best mate. "That old hag crucioed me, James," he muttered so quietly it was almost inaudible. "And that prat is still there. I'm his brother, and I left him there. With HER." James began to stretch out his arms over his head, but let them flop down to his side mid stretch once he looked over at Sirius and saw him with his head buried in his hands. James frowned deeply and sat down beside Sirius. James's eyes widened when Sirius told her his mum had crucioed him "She...oh, fuck," James said. The mere thought of Sirius having to endure that made James sick to his stomach. He couldn't stand the thought of what it must have been like for Sirius, or of what it must have looked like if by some bizarre chance James had been standing there, so he tried not to think about it too much. It was incomprehensible to James how a mother could do that to her own son, but although James could not possibly hope to understand that, he instantly understood why Sirius had run away. "Sirius," James began gravely. "You had to leave. I know you feel bad because Regulus is still there, but Sirius if she did that to you, you had to get out, Regulus or not," he said. James thought Sirius must have known this deep down, or else why would he be here? Still, James though maybe it'd help to hear it from someone else, or at least he hoped so anyway. Sirius sat quietly for a moment, knowing that James was right. He had to leave. It wasn't just a spur of the moment rash decision as Regulus had insinuated. It was something he had to do. He just didn't want to think about it any longer - or ever again if he could help it. Letting a small smirk form slowly on his face, he finally looked back up at James, his eyes barely showing from behind the hair that had fallen in front of his face. "I've always figured I'd make a better Potter than a Black," he said, forcing humor to surface. No use dwelling on what was done, he had no time turner to change things, and the best way to deal with something was to use humor (and pretend it never happened). James embraced the lighter more humorous subjected. Sitting around moping and talking how bloody horrible everything was wasn't going to make Sirius, or himself for that matter, feel any better. He smiled slightly "I think you'll make a pretty brilliant Potter," he said. "There aren't as many rules to being a Potter," James told Sirius. "In fact, there aren't any rules at all, not that I know of anyway, and if I do say so myself I know loads about being a Potter," he said. On the subject of Potters, James wondered how exactly they would go about telling his parents. James had know doubt that they would let him stay, but there was the question of how much they should tell them. "Er, but anyway, I'm not sure if we should tell my mum and dad that your mum, well, you know," James said, a pained expression on his face as he thought about it. "You don't want anyone else to know about it...do you?" James asked. He wasn't entirely sure if it was a good idea that Sirius kept this quiet, but James figured that as long as Sirius was safe, it was his choice who he told. As long as she couldn't do it again, it didn't really matter if she was punished for it. James thought she deserved it, but it was Sirius's call. Sirius sighed, "I'd rather this be between us. I really don't want it to get out, and it would only worry your mum more than she needs to be." After a brief pause, Sirius continued, "Let this be one of those things that we don't talk about again either. Maybe I'd sooner forget it happened that way." "Do you really think they won't mind me staying here? I don't want to impose." Which is true, he didn't want to be an imposition. He didn't expect he would be, the Potters had always been very nice to him, he felt more at home here than he ever did at the house he left behind. James nodded "Yeah," he agreed. Sirius was right, his mum would definitely work herself up into a fit if she found out, that was one reason he didn't think it was a good idea to tell them. "Right, then from now on we'll just never mention it again." "No, they won't mind," James assured. "They like you, my dad thinks your funny," he snickered. "And do you think my mum be able to handle knowing you were just...I don't know, wandering around somewhere? She's too much of a mum she wouldn't be able to take it," James explained. "We've got loads of room, so don't worry about it. We'll tell them when they wake up tomorrow." It wasn't as if they had a choice anyway, they'd have to tell James's parents why Sirius was here and that he'd be staying, unless he tried to hide Sirius or something, which was not only unnecessary but James thought it was damn near impossible to try and hide Sirius Black. |
