Frank & Matilda
LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY mattydukes)
Who: Matty and Frank
When: Monday night, after dinner
Where: Quidditch Pitch!
Rating: PG probably, unless Frank ends up falling to his non-canon death to which it would be bloody and therefore R!
Summary: Matty and Frank meet after dinner on the pitch for a flying lesson, and the first meeting of the secret Quadpot club (ooo)
Matty hadn't anticipated the weather being cool for early October and hadn't really dressed for it. Wearing her old rugby shorts and a faded blue jumper, she strolled onto the pitch, undeterred, with a large smile on her face. Tonight she was going to help make Frank a better flyer, and truly teaching people the art of Quidditch was one of her passions in life-as pathetic as it may sound. She definetly wouldn't be captain if she didn't have some marm-ish quality in her. She was just happy Frank was giving her the opportunity.
As agreed no one would be witness to their practicing, but as Matty looked around and saw the castle's lights winking in the not-so-distant-distance she wondered how this would be accomplished when the rest of the Quadpot group were present also. The very thought of having more people come had Maty grinning again, and she took a seat on the grass waiting for Frank to show up. She sincerely hoped he would. "If he doesn't, I very well might hex his arse," she mused wryly, pulling her blonde hair into a low ponytail as she waited.
Frank headed to the pitch as soon as he'd made sure his House was in order. He was always a prefect first and a seventeen year old second.
"Oi, Matty, where's my lemon drops?" he asked, before he was even on the pitch, teasing in his voice. He was carrying his broom which he'd unshrunk as soon as he was out of the castle and he was beyond thrilled to get to show Matty that he really could fly. At least a little bit.
"Oh, I guess I should have acknowledge the president of the Quodpot club first, right?" he asked, throwing down his bag and giving her a silly muggle salute.
"At ease private," she smiled, tossing him the bag of lemon drops as she went to push herself off of the ground. Broom in hand she turned back to him, "don't get sick on those, I don't want you ruining the field," she poked him in the chest before stealing a drop for herself, chewing on it indulgently.
"So how are things," she started, flexing her hands as she pulled the broom closer to her, leaning on it as she looked at him.
"Things are stressful, I won't lie," he said, "but that's why we're out here. There are so few people that I ever feel like I can just be me around... I think that's what's going to be best about Quodpot. Aside from Benjy they're all my best friends," he said, before adding quickly, "But I don't mind that he's coming. Whether he wants them or not, he could use some friends," he said.
He let Bonnie hover and slowly climbed on it, smiling brightly, as if he'd just one a Quidditch game all on his own. It was an impressive feat for him and anyone who'd ever seen him even near a broom would know that it was.
Matty nodded in understanding as she listened to him, looking down as he finished. "I really don't understand tht boy," she replied, in reference to Benjy. "He can be very sweet and yet..." she trailed off,and rolled her eyes. "You boys are so exasperating," she finished with a smile as she watched Frank's broom hover and followed his lead as she hopped sideways onto her own.
"Allright Longbottom, we should start off slow then," she smiled lightly, and nudged her broom upwards, ascending slowly.
Frank nodded and very slowly started creeping upward and following her. "You think blokes are exasperating?" he asked incredulously. "We're so simple. It's always either food or Quidditch with us. It's girls with their secret language and always saying things that have three meanings and going to the loo in flocks!" he protested.
He was so caught up in saying he'd hardly noticed he was quite high off the ground now. When he looked down his eyes got big.
Matty bit back her chuckle and looked down at the ground also, a familiar sight by now. She wondered when she'd gotten so desensitized. Acknowledging Frank's need for a distraction Matty flew a little closer and gave him a very incredulous look back.
"We always say what we mean," she countered, meeting his eyes and forcing him to look at her. "It seems that you boys just don't speak english very well," she smiled then and shook her head, the air blowing her blonde hair across her face. "And I'll have you know we go to the loo in flocks because we take that time to talk about you boys, and get dolled up.." she trailed off as she became thoughtful, "though sometimes you really just need to go to the loo, andthen the flock gets awakward..."
She blushed and cleared her throat to immediately change the subject. "I'm guessing this is about Alice," she leaned over to pat his arm,a sympathetic look on her face "just know that she's probably just as confused as you are."
Swinging her leg over the broom so that she was now straddling it properly she inclined her head towards the lake. "Want to move forward a bit?"
Frank nodded and leaned forward on his broom, still looking surprised as it responded in turn. Bonnie liked him, she really did, and she wasn't going to buck him off and make him look stupid and it was truly astonishing. He had half a mind to never ever ever come down.
"It's not only Alice," he said, "It's a lot of things, but Alice just gets lumped together with the fact that now we have a Masquerade and I've already asked her to get a drink with me at Hogsmeade and is it all right to ask someone out for two things at once, and do I even want to risk asking her for something else until we see if Hogsemeade turns into another disaster?" he asked, all in one breath and not realizing that he was suddenly going a good bit faster and everything was just fine.
"Wait, I'm flying," he said, really just noticing that he wasn't just hovering, he was properly flying with Matty right next to him and he hadn't even noticed. "FLYING MATTY!" he shouted above the breeze looking absolutely jubilant. This sealed the deal, he was never coming back down to Earth. From up here everything seemed right with the world and that's how it was supposed to be.
Frank's joy was infectious and Matty couldn't help but share in it as she smiled brightly at him. "See," she called out over the roaring of the air, "all you needed was a little confidence," she grinned again before leaning forward, her broom taking off a little faster."Follow me!" she called back, lessening her speed as she gestured towards the lake that lay below them.
Of all the things Matty liked to do while flying (dives not included) her favourite was skimming the top of the lake, to defy any law of gravity and physics she could. As she slowed, waiting for him, she swung her leg around again into a more comfortable position, her feet dangling just above the water. "I think you should ask Alice to the ball Frank," she called out, more softly this time as he was approaching. "Asking her out for the ball should be expected if you asked her out before," she screwed up her face and shook her head, "it's common sense you silly prat."
"Can we talk about this sometime when I'm NOT having the time of my life?" he called back, still grinning like a maniac and letting his feet splash in the water just a bit, even if it was cold and a stupid thing to do. He'd never felt so free and he was going to enjoy every minute of it.
He pulled up when he thought he saw a ripple that looked a bit too muc like the squid and was surprised that he basically shot into the sky. Now the Bonnie was flying she was REALLY flying and Frank felt like the broom was enjoying it as much as he was.
"C'mon Matty, you've got to stick with me in case I faaaaalll!" He called to her teasingly. He wasn't going to fal, he couldn't fall, he was like GLUE on the broom. This was perfect, amazing, fantastic, and that's when the thought that he wished he was sharing this with Alice hit him like a ton of bricks, downing his high just a bit. It was stillw wonderful, and Matty was an awesome friend, but the lonliness of not sharing it with Alice caused his stomach to hitch and he couldn't believe he felt like that. What WAS that?
He pushed it out of his mind and slowed down his broom so he could catch his breath and Matty could fly up to him.
Matty snorted and lifted her broom upwards so that she followed him up, her blonde hair blowing wildly behind her. When she was on level with Frank she couldn't help but let out an exhilerated chuckle. "So it seems you've become a flying junkie," she smiled at him and looked upwards towards the sky, the moon just peering out from a smatering of clouds.
"I can't wait until our Quadpot club gets going," she looked back at him, the name Alice running in the back of her mind. "I love sharing flying with anyone," she commented, her smile taking on a wry quirk as she glanced pointedly at him. "It'll be brill when everyone else is out here." She flew a little bit aways from him raising her eyebrow suddenly in a chalenge.
"So what do you think Longbottom, feel fit enough to race?"
"I feel fit enough to try a race," he said with a huge smile. "I don't imagine I'm going to be beating a Quidditch legend like yourself but it should be fun," he agreed. "Around the stands and back?" he asked nodding toward them. Not even waiting for her to agree he pushed forward on his broom and took off. He was never the sort to cheat but this was all in good fun.
The stands were actually a good bit further away than they'd look and he had to flow down to actually circle them properly. He couldn't see Matty but since he had to keep his eyes straight ahead of him that meant she could be above, below, behind or even out front considering how dark it had gotten.
Matty's eyes narrowed in concentration and she couldn't help the smile from filling her face. If anything Matty was a very calm person, she thought things through and took her chances that way. So, when Frank decided to spur on ahead of her, Matty simply looked for the fastest way around him before taking her shot, which had her high above him, her figure silhoueted by the moon.
Diving Matty made a close brush with Frank's broom, laughing as she pulled out of a roll and continued on past the stands and around the posts. "Come now Frank!" she called back, laughing all the while.
