It had been a long day -- he still had essays to write when he got back to the dorm later that evening -- but as he walked into the Great Hall for dinner, he was in a relatively good mood. For a bit longer, he could pretend that there was nothing of consequence beyond his friends and the wonderful Hogwarts food. Then again, one could argue that, even taking homework into account, there was still nothing else of consequence to be considered in the situation. Spotting his friends already seated, he made a beeline for the Slytherin table and sat down next to Tahirah with a greeting.
"Hullo."
Tahirah grinned, reached for a butter roll to go with her pumpkin juice. She'd been looking forward to dinner all day and now that it was here, she was glad to sit next to her favourite person, or one of them, "Hullo back. Did you have an utter shite day too?" She dunked her roll in her pumpkin juice as she waited for the answer, smirking slightly.
"Of course. Three classes in one day is hardly what one could even remotely claim as fun. But I'm momentarily pretending I don't have a pile of homework waiting for me. It's utterly depressing," he said, shaking his head as he began to put food on his plate. "Was there anything particularly unpleasant about yours, or is a particular not even necessary?"
"We can help each other with the homework," Tahirah said, rolling her eyes. "Goodness knows most of it is rubbish anyways."
She took another roll, frowning, "Nothing eventful, really, about today, I don't think. Just the same old, same old." She smiled sweetly at him, "And you, of course."
"Misery loves company," he said, slightly unpleasantly. "And from the way people talk, it shall only get worse as we get closer to our exams."
Taking a bite from his own roll, he nodded, and after swallowing, said "I suppose uneventful is better than eventful but horrid, yes?" He felt oddly pleased at being mentioned specifically but made no mention of it, opting for a drink of pumpkin juice instead.
I dunno, I think people might exaggerate," Tahirah shrugged. "But maybe they don't. I hope they do ... even though ... well, it's not as if I'll be putting any of this to practical use, right? I'll be betrothed before I know it and then have to marry and have children and ... I don't even think I'd want a career, you know? I just don't like the idea of being all prim and proper."
Tahirah didn't need Veritaserum, with Evan, she always spoke freely. With Evan, it was easy to speak freely.
"I wish something really exciting would happen," Tahirah said softly, playing with her hair. "Something nasty to the Mudbloods or something. None of this ...nonsense that's been happening that I could care less about."
"Probably. I've heard some people have mental breakdowns, but I won't be losing my head over something like that," he said a bit arrogantly, shaking his head. It couldn't be that difficult, considering they were always taught anything they needed to know. "It's good that you at least know how to be prim and proper, since it is exceedingly important in society, but I like you well enough the way you are. I hope you don't get betrothed to some git who can't appreciate you."
Taking a bite of his meal, he nodded. "They need to be put in their places."
"I wish I were a guy and might possibly have some say in the manner," Tahirah said. "Unless it's all just a farce and you don't have a say in the manner. And Auggie will end up in the same position as me, just auctioned off to whomever Mother and Father deem appropriate? D'you think it helps if I'm dating someone? Like, let's say I was dating you- you're a respectable pureblood. I think my parents would jump at the chance to marry me to you, guaranteeing the purebloodedness of their grandchildren."
Or so Tahirah thought. If her children's great-great-grandmother was a Muggle, that was far enough back to breed out the impurity, right? As it was, Tahirah was nearly pure herself. So nearly that most of the people at the school (and in society) thought the Rookwood name pure.
"Something to expel them all," Tahirah nodded. "Taht would be wonderful."
"I'm not entirely certain if we do. We probably have more say than you girls, but we would have to have a very, very good and convincing reason, considering it's about connections and furthering proper society. To break off an engagement could be taken as an insult to the other family, and if the family is influential enough, it would be most unwise to take the chance. I think dating another Pureblood would help chances, however, because there seems to be little point in breaking off a working relationship between to well-bred Purebloods without a good reason," he said, nodding. "I would jump at the chance for that to be the case, myself."
It was not until the words were out of his mouth that he realised what he said, and clearing his throat, he took a swift drink of his pumpkin juice -- ignorant to the Veritaserum within it -- and pressed on.
"It would be fantastic to not have to worry about them. They're utterly revolting, the whole lot of them."
