Enid & Frank
LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY astepbehind_)
Characters: Enid Longbottom and Frank Longbottom
Setting: Great Hall - Dinner
Summary: Enid just received the "letter" from Mum! Oh noes! What shall she do? FRANK TO THE RESCUE!
Rating: PG-13 for language, I'm sure.
STATUS: UNFINISHED
Dinner was brilliant as usual, Enid was just finishing up her second helping of spotted dick when the owls started arriving for evening mail post. To her dismay, a letter dropped right in front of Enid's plate, addressed to her. Who was sending her mail? She hadn't done anything wrong, as far as she knew, so it shouldn't be her Mum, right? She turned the letter over, revealing her parents return address and once again was puzzled. Why in Merlin's name was she getting a letter from her parents without having done anything wrong? Was something wrong at home? Had something happened to her Father? Thinking something was wrong at home, Enid ripped open the letter and read it as quickly as possible. She read it again, just to make sure she wasn't imagining things, and let out a very low cry.
Enid pushed herself away from the table and stood up, tears already streaming down her face. "Frank!" She called out, turning and heading straight for the Gryffindor table. Finding him, she wasted no time, waving the letter in the air, crying and talking. "She signed a betrothal agreement! She really did it! She signed a bloody agreement and Father signed it too and I'm going to be married now and I don't want to be married and it's to some pureblood snob and I HATE HER so much!" She was still waving the parchment around, talking loudly and crying. It was a wonder that she hadn't thrown her dinner up yet, or fainted on the floor.
"Bloody hell," Frank said, not really knowing what else to say. "Come on," he said, grabbing her by the arm and nearly dragging her out of the hall, stopping once they were away from listening ears. "Take a deep breath, Enid, it doesn't matter what she did, we aren't going to let it happen," he said, pulling her in for a tight hug and rubbing her back, even kissing the top of her head as he hugged her.
"I swear on my word that we'll get you out of it," he said, pulling away a bit. "And do you think I'd ever give you my word if I didn't believe I could manage it?" he asked. "You know me better than that. I've thought this might be coming for awhile so I've already been working on some ideas," he said, chucking her under the chin so she'd look up at him.
"So no tears, please?" he asked. "There's nothing we can do this very instant, but if mum doesn't think you're fighting it it's going to give us a MUCH better shot at getting you out of it before she even realizes we've done anything, all right?" he asked. He pulled her back into a hug because he needed the reassurance just as much as she did.
"Mum is a real bitch to do this," he whispered. Frank NEVER used that word. Ever. It would have been the first time Enid had ever heard him cuss as far as he could remember.
Enid let herself be pulled without stopping him. Tears were still streaming down her face, but at least she wasn't wailing and making a huge scene. Sure, there were people staring at her on their way out, and she had no doubt she got the attention of several Professor's with her little speech. But she didn't care. She was betrothed! Her Mother didn't care about her at all, she knew. All she cared about was Enid making the family proud. Enid couldn't give two shits about making the family proud. She wanted to do what made her happy and that was not being married off to some snob to have his babies and never live out her dreams.
"I just don't know why she would do this to me." Her face was pressed against Frank's chest and she was probably drenching it, but she didn't seem to care. Frank was her support right now. "I'm going to become a Dragon Keeper whether she likes it or not." She took a shuddering breath and looked up at him. "Do you promise that I won't be forced into a marriage? I'll do what you say and be nice if that'll help." Her eyes widened as he swore quietly. Frank was swearing! She knew at that point, he'd do everything he could to help her.
Frank nodded. "I don't just promise, I swear. You know we'd already said that I'd get my own place next summer and you'd live with me... that's still going to happen. I'll talk to Amelia and see if she knows anything about a brother getting custody of a sister, and I'll talk to Aunt Enid about figuring out a plan to get you out of the country if that's what it takes. She has friends in Serbia, remember? That lady who smelled like Rose oil?" he asked.
"We might be able to hide you out there until you're seventeen if that's what it takes, and on top of that, if she threatens to disown you, it's not going to do her any good. I'm seventeen, how does she think that she's going to outlive me?" he asked with a smirk. "She can disown you all she likes and as soon as she kicks off I'll just own you right back in," he said, stroking her hair.
"And... if nothing else works, the week before your wedding we'll take every penny either of us have out of Gringotts and we'll run away. We'll find some dragon camp and everything will work out for you," he promised. "I will NOT let her marry you off, even if it means learning how to cast an Imperius," he said, in a firm voice that only a Gryffindor could ever master. He meant it, he really did.
Enid nodded, glad that she had Frank here with her. Her tears were already drying up listening to his plans. "I don't really want to go to Siberia in hiding, but if it'll work. We only have to get until I'm 17, then I can break off the contract myself. That won't make her very happy, but I'd rather do that then go into hiding."
Enid even smiled a bit, "Besides, Mum can disown me, but Aunt Enid and Uncle Algie would never. They love me too much." Oh gosh, love. She hadn't even thought of that. What if Josh found out? What if he didn't want to be around her anymore because she was betrothed. "Do I have to not date anyone? I don't want to put my romantic life on hold just because I'm suppose to marry some Slytherin snob." She really didn't want to have to stop snogging boys because of something stupid like this. "Oh and you will not be learning how to cast the Imperius, Frank Longbottom. That's an Unforgivable and I won't let you use it. Not even for me." Never mind the fact that she'd use any Unforgivable if it meant saving his life. But this was completely different!
"She should thank her lucky stars I'd stop with the Imperius," he said, making a face. "This was beyond wrong and I'm having a difficult time not wanting to floo home and give her a piece of my mind."
Frank considered the dating question. "I think when it comes to blokes you're going to have to be pretty clear with them about what's going on. The good ones will all understand," he said, still rubbing a small circle on her back to comfort her. "And you can still go to Hogsmeade with them, you'll just have to keep it a bit more low key. I wouldn't recommend getting caught snogging because if it got back to mum she might try to take you out of school," he sighed.
"If she tried it, I'd leave school myself, start making threats that I was going to marry a muggle," he said slowly. "You know, that might not be a bad last ditch effort either. She wants you to marry well, but it's my children who are going to carry on our name. I can always tell her she has to decide-- Either let you go free or I'll give up everything and marry the least suitable girl I can find," he said.
"Well, as long as I can still have a boyfriend, I suppose I can handle this. I suppose I can try not to get caught snogging, that'll be difficult though. I guess I can keep it to a minimum. Or just date a Hufflepuff, then I can have access to his room and we can snog on his bed!" Enid was already looking much better now, the tears were gone and her eyes just looked a bit puffy.
But, She sighed, "I don't want you to ruin your life because of me. I think I have an idea of how to deal with this without getting in trouble with Mum." She pulled away from him, looking up into his eyes. "I appreciate you wanting to do all this stuff for me to get me out of it, but I think that we should try a few other options before running away." Enid was proud of herself for having come up with an idea all her own.
"I haven't thought it all the way through yet, though. But, I think it would be easier to get him to not want the betrothal to happen and convince his parents to call it off and that I'm completely unsuitable. Obviously I can't do much, because I'll have to avoid Mum, but I have no doubt that I can just appear overly obnoxious and that might work!"
Frank nodded.
"Oh definitely," he said. "The running away was all for after this school year and only if nothing else works. Gryffindors tend to plan for the worst case scenario first and work our way back," he said, a slight teasing in his voice as he loosened his hold on her.
"I think obnoxious is a brilliant way to go. And he's A slytherin so keep in mind that being full on, "I don't want you" obnoxious would probably turn him on," he said, making a face that looked as if the very thought made him ill. "I think you'd do far better by pretending to be excited and that you're going to make the most bizarre, unsuitable, terrifying wife ever," he said.
"OH!" he added, getting a gleam in his eye. "Talk about GoatFrank obsessively. Tell him you want GoatFrank in the wedding!" he said, his smile growing bigger. "This could be fun, Enid. Think of it as a spot of harmless revenge. I bet we could brainstorm out fifty terrifying but pleasant things you could say in front of him that will have him running for the hills."
"Ew. I certainly don't want to turn him on." Enid wrinkled her nose, shaking her head. "But, I can certainly pretend like I'd be the most bizarre and unsuitable wife ever. I can do that! I'm a good actress." Her day was already looking up.
Enid's mood was brightening already, and she began thinking about all the thing she could say to scare him off. "I can ask Dirk for help too, he'd probably have all sorts of ideas, and Josh might too!" All they'd have to do would be to tell her what they thought would be terrifying to have in a wife. "I'd ask Severus, but I have a feeling he'd tell me it'd just be terrifying to marry normal me." She snickered, thinking that she should probably ask him anyway.
"Goat Frank? Oh brilliant! Yes. He's going to in the wedding, for sure." Enid nodded, bouncing a bit. "And I want an all pink and green wedding, and loads of flowers everywhere. And I want muggleborns invited!" This might work after-all!
"So that's the plan for now. Be enthusiastic to the point of making him ill. You need to be careful, if he suspects you're doing it on purpose he may be clever enough to try and turn the tables. I think a nice touch might be owling mum and asking her to send you some wedding planning magazines. If you carry them around with you it'll make you seem as if you're truly getting into this, and it will have the added benefit of throwing mum for a loop," he said.
"She's oblivious enough that she may just believe she's won... and in the mean time I'll work on seeing if I can get any kind of legal say in what happens to you. But this is completely managable," he said. "There's nothing that could ever be so big you and I couldn't fix it together," he said, giving her a sincere smile.
"Now we should get back to dinner," he said, starting to guide her back that way. "Talk to your housemates, let them know what's going on. They'd never tell anyone that you were plotting. I'd warn you against trusting Severus with any of this. I like him, but you'd be putting him in a bad position with one of his housemates to keep a secret like that from Augustus," he reasoned.
"And... In case I don't say this enough, I love you, sis," he added quietly.
