Characters: Sirius Black and Lily Evans
Setting: The Gryffindor common room in the afternoon of 21 September
Summary: Lily noticed Sirius alone in the common room and is unable to contain herself, so she goes to pester him. More TBD.
Rating: TBD
The previous day's festivities had finally began to sink in. While she hadn't done anything nearly as silly as some of her peers, she had finally really realized that Severus had asked her out. On a date. A real date. And she'd said no. By the time it had happened, Lily was fairly certain that most of her own Veritaserum had worn off. On the other hand, she couldn't help wondering if...maybe she hadn't drank any she would have said yes to spare feelings. Would she have? She wasn't sure.
Feeling a bit down about it all, Lily decided to make use of her Friday off. She couldn't believe she had announced that she wanted to be lazy of all things and decided to prove to any teachers who might have seen her entry just how productive she could be.
Abandoning her dormitory for the common room, the first person Lily noticed was Sirius. This wasn't new, but the manner was. Usually Sirius was the center of attention. This time, though, he was sitting on his own - no Potter, Remus, or Peter to speak of - and was he doing homework? Intrigued, Lily crossed the room and fell onto the couch next to him. "Hey."
Sirius looked up from his parchment, and gave her a very weak smile. "Hey, yourself," he said, and unlike usual, he left it at that. No witty remarks or sarcastic quips. No teasing, mocking, or pleas for her to give James a chance. Just a simple hey.
With a slight scowl his eyes transfixed back on his book and parchment again. Funny how usually Transfiguration was his easiest course, and yet today, with all the stress and guilt he was carrying around, he felt like the book was written in an entire different language, some ancient tongue that no one alive could figure out. It made it quite difficult to write out the essay that they were assigned.
Still, it isn't as if he really had anything better to do than homework, with having successfully alienated his friends. They were probably better off without him, considering how much of a royal fuck up he felt like he was. (He would never think such a thought in a better mood, but in light of the circumstances, he couldn't quite help it.)
Lily chewed helplessly on her lip. It would honestly take an idiot to not be able to figure out that something was wrong with Sirius and Lily, not being an idiot and happening to be friends with him, was able to figure that out rather quickly. However, this was a sort of Sirius no one had to deal with very often and while Lily had seen it before, that didn't mean that he didn't make her feel a bit uneasy. Uncouth, flirty, and obnoxious Sirius was one thing - but reserved, quiet, and timid Sirius? That was just frightening.
Trying to act as nonchalant as humanly possible, Lily reached into her bag to find one of her books. She was supposed to be doing homework down here, after all. Clearing her throat, she glanced at Sirius through the hair that was falling into her face and asked, "What's up?"
My best mates hate me? I'm an utter prat? I'm bad for everyone's health? A good number of responses came to mind when she asked him what was up, though none that he would actually admit to. Instead, he gave Lily a nonchalant shrug, and passively stated, "Transfiguration essay. Exciting, hm?"
In a moment of frustration, particularly as Transfiguration is one of his best courses and it seemed so foreign to him at the moment, Sirius pushed his book aside with a sigh. "Bloody homework. Why do our professors insist on making us work?"
Small talk, he could handle small talk with Lily. He didn't have to talk about how utterly miserable he was, or how the world must be ending as his friends weren't even speaking to him any longer. Nor did he have to worry about how much he wrecked anything for Regulus in his rash decision to run away, because clearly acting rashly was never a good thing and it would always come back to haunt him. Had he always been such an utter prat?
Mostly Sirius hated all the self-loathing thoughts going through his mind. It was hard not to think so lowly of himself considering all his friends were at odds with each other and it was HIS fault. But he, above everything, hated succumbing to such horrid thoughts about himself. He was Sirius Black, he was above self-hate. Right?
