RP Log Amelia and Edgar
LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY properbones)
Characters: Edgar and Amelia Bones
Setting: The office in which Amelia works and the Ministry of Magic Cafeteria on 2 September
Summary: Edgar kidnaps his younger sister to share a celebratory lunch with him at work
Rating: G
Amelia could tell from the moment she walked in that morning that it was going to be one of those days. Over the weekend there accumulated a stack of paper at least a half a foot high, and no doubt it would only keep growing throughout the day. It was no surprise really; they were in the middle of an important case. A repeat offender was finally being brought before the court, and his dossier of purported crimes was extensive. Everything had to be checked, double checked, and cross-checked with her colleagues. It was hard work, but someone had to do it. So after filling her mug with coffee, Amelia settled into her desk and set to work, breaking only to fill her mug with water or to use the toilet. By lunchtime she had barely scratched the surface of her work, and made the executive decision not to leave her desk. She was hungry, yes, but if need be she could always send out for some food with a colleague who's burden was less than her own.
Edgar had a lovely new set of robes, and a badge, and a tag with his name on it. He felt a hundred times better in these new things than he ever had in those ruddy 'officer-in-training' ones, and a new sort of respect seemed to be directed toward him wherever he walked around the ministry. He hadn't done much that day, just more paperwork, but at least there were no more bogus, impromptu curse-related training activities, or written tests, or field practicals. There was just the field itself.
Grinning widely he strode toward Amelia's cubicle, loosening the tie he'd deigned to wear only because Sarah had insisted he needed to make a good impression on his first "real" day. Bugger but he hated ties. His hair was pulled back and other than the dislodged collar he looked neat and professional and it was lunch time. Time to drag Ames off for a little sibling celebration.
"Amelia Susan Bones!" Edgar called the minute he stepped into the office.
Amelia’s eyes scanned the page before her, searching for the law. She knew it was in this book, on this page. She had seen it once before while researching something else. Now, however, when she needed it, she couldn’t find what she was looking for. It wasn’t the persecution’s main argument, but it was important nonetheless. The devil was in the details, her boss always said, and he had seen too many cases fall apart due to lack of details. So she needed this detail, and she needed it now. Finding the passage she needed, Amelia quickly pulled out a sheet of parchment and a quill to scribble it down.
“Hello Edgar,” Amelia greeted her brother without looking up from the file that was currently open in front of her. “How are you today?”
"I'm peachy keen, actually, and you're obviously up to your eyeballs," Edgar replied, pushing a pile of paper over so he could perch on the corner of her desk. "And that's Officer Bones, actually."
Amelia was about to protest Edgar’s rearranging of her documents when she caught the tail end of his comments. Those words were enough to make her lose focus on the writing in front of her and look up at her brother an excited smile on her face. “Edgar,” she beamed. “You finished! You’re an officer! I’m so proud of you!”
She leapt up from her seat and embraced her brother. “This is so exciting! Look at you!” She took a step back to examine him fully. “New robes, new name tag, new job! And is that a new tie?”
Edgar rolled his eyes. "Sarah's idea. Thinks I should take it upon myself to look more professional now that I've qualified. I think it's bollocks, but I can't say no to her, especially after she's made me celebratory pancakes. Anyway, we're having lunch together."
"You could never say no to Sarah on anything Ed," Amelia teased. As she lowered herself back into her seat her face dropped. "You know I would love to have lunch with you to celebrate, but you see how much work I have to do. And it keeps on coming. Maybe later this week? The trial's on Thursday so I'll be free after then."
"Ames, I know you're probably starving to death, and twenty minutes to each a sandwich with your big brother isn't going to set you back horribly, I'm sure," Edgar said. "And if you keep saying no I'm just going to pick you up, throw you over my shoulder and walk out of here with you, so you might as well go ahead and agree," he added with a wide smile.
Amelia shot him a look of shock and disbelief. "You wouldn't dare," she exclaimed. Turning back to the work before her, Amelia sighed. Her face filled with sadness once more. "Ed. I promise. As soon as this case is over we will celebrate. Right now though, I really need to get through this. Another time. I promise."
"Amelia, you're a workaholic. Ma would talk you into the ground if she knew you were skipping a meal," Edgar admonished.
“Ed, I’ll be fine,” she assured her brother, patting his leg. “You go on without me. If I get hungry I can always send out for something. I’ll be fine. I’m a big girl now”
"I wasn't kidding," Edgar said, quirking his eyebrow and getting to his feet. "Don't say I didn't warn you," he added as he reached over and lifted her right out of her chair, and, as promised, over his shoulder.
“Wha-,” Amelia began as she was hoisted over her brother’s shoulder. She flailed as Edgar carried her past her intrigued coworkers and away from her desk. “Edgar Humphrey Bones put me down! This isn’t funny! You can’t just kidnap people against their will! I should have you tried for kidnapping me! I have work to do!”
"And I'll arrest you for being a lame-pants," Edgar replied, only setting her down once they were by the lift. "And I believe that little of the kidnapee's will is actually involved in the kidnappers decision to kidnap in the first place. And besides, it's chowder and sandwich day. Thursday is mutton pie, and the mutton pie here tastes like it was thrown up by a hippogriff."
“That is by far the worst excuse for arresting somebody,” Amelia scolded. “Really Edgar. A “lame-pants” and “chowder and sandwich day?” Don’t they train you lot at all before setting you loose? You are right about the mutton pie. I avoid it at all cost. But Friday is Fish and Chips. Wouldn’t you rather have that together?” She looked down at her watch. “I really need to get back to work. I’ll see you Friday? Okay?”
"Ames. Come on. Twenty minutes. It's not going to kill you," Edgar said. "What if I'm on call tomorrow and I get eaten by a plant? Then you'll forever regret not having had lunch with your dear old big brother. The only older brother you've got, Ames. What a shame."
She sighed. “Edgar you are so melodramatic, I don’t know where you get it from. But fine. We’ll have lunch. Twenty minutes. But then I really need to get back. Okay?”
"Fabulous! Twenty minutes it is. Turkey or ham and cheese?" Edgar asked, bouncing as he pushed the button for the lift. "And I'm pretty sure the melodrama I inherited from Ma. Josh is lucky he hasn't been fawned over into oblivion. Her baby boy growing up and all."
“Uhhhh egg salad,” Amelia ventured as the lift rode toward the cafeteria. “You’re probably right. She nearly died when I was moving out of the house. And at your wedding. And when we graduated Hogwarts. Josh is going to have it the worse I think.” She paused.
“To think. In less than a year all of us will have graduated from school. Feels like just yesterday we were all in classes.”
"Feel like just yesterday we made Josh wear that ridiculous dragon costume and jump out of the treehouse," Edgar added. "But remember when Matthew was born? And Ma held him for the first time? 'Oh Eddie! He's just like you and oh it's been so long since I got to hold you and I can't believe my baby has a baby of his own!'"
Amelia laughed. “That costume was the ugliest thing in existence. We should have burned it. Watch. One day Mother will give it to Matty.” She gasped. She had neglected to ask about Sarah and Matty. How could she have been so rude?
“How are they,” she asked excitedly. “Sarah and Matty? How is my little nephew? He must be getting so big now.”
"Well if you came over occasionally you'd see just how big," Edgar said, nudging Amelia good-naturedly. "But they're fine. Sarah's keeping herself busy and Matty's crawling, albeit backwards."
“Okay. Fine. I can take a hint,” she smiled. “But between the move and work I haven’t had any time, literally. I haven’t gone back to the house all summer if that makes you feel any better. I had to owl Josh the compass. I just hope it doesn’t get lost. I really wanted to give it to him myself.”
"Well we wanted you at the tournament," Edgar said as the door dinged at the floor and the two of them stepped out. "And I know perfectly well that you haven't been to the house all summer because Ma hasn't shut up about it every time we've been over ourselves."
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” she apologized as they made their way into the bustling cafeteria. “And Mother’s probably about ready to kill me for not showing up. I try to owl her. It’s just usually by the end of the day I’m so tired I go right to sleep. I’ll go over this weekend. We should have family dinner again.”
"If Ma had her way every night'd be family dinner. She'd even drag Josh home from Hogwarts," Edgar replied. "But we're both supposed to be adults now, right? We probably shouldn't have to have our mother tell us to come home to visit."
“I haven’t seen her all summer,” Amelia protested as she picked up a sandwich and sniffed it. She wrinkled her nose and offered it to her brother. “Does this smell off to you?”
“Besides it’s of my own free will that I want to go. See her, and dad, and Sarah, and Matty.”
"Smells a little wonky, but it is eggs," Edgar answered, taking a whiff as he grabbed a bowl of chowder for himself. "I'll floo Pop tonight and tell him to tell Ma that we'll come over for dinner on Sunday, how's that? I'd tell Ma directly but I'm sure she'd combust with glee."
“You’re right,” Amelia replied as she set the dish down again. “I’ll just grab a salad then.” She grabbed a plate of salad as they continued down the line. “Aw Ed that’s too kind of you. I’m paying.” She pulled out her wallet as they came to the cashier.
“Listen. I have an idea. You and Sarah need to go celebrate. I’ll watch Matty. What do you say? Friday night, you take her out on a romantic date and leave the little one to me. I’ll even watch him at my place.”
"Suggesting I need to get some, do you?" Edgar teased, grinning as they took seats and he popped the cap on his juice. "I'll ask Sarah, see what she thinks. Not that I don't think she'd enjoy an evening out, but she could already have something planning. And I'm sure Matty would love to see a little more of his Auntie."
“Mother wants another grandchild,” Amelia teased back as she took a sip of water. “You ask her. I’ll be ready to baby-sit on Friday. I need to see more of my nephew so any time you two want to go out, just tell me and I’ll baby-sit. That’s what little sisters are for.”
"Good to know," Edgar said. "And Ma wants 500 grandchildren. Now that she's got one she's already harping on Sarah and I for another. We're not baby-making machines, and Matty's only six months next week!"
“It’s already been six months!? Where has the time gone?”
"You've got me. Wait until he starts Hogwarts. I was thinking about it yesterday... I'm sure I won't know what to do with myself," Edgar said. "Another generation of the Bones family. What's the bet that he's Head Boy and Quidditch Captain, eh?"
“I don’t even want to think about that,” Amelia replied. “We’ll be so old by then. Well at least you will be. And he has to be both, it’s in his blood. He comes from very good stock.” Amelia glanced down at her watch once more. “Oh look at the time,” she exclaimed, pushing away her seat and standing up. “I need to get back to work. It was wonderful having lunch with you. And congratulations. Let me know about Friday yes?”
"Did twenty minutes pass by that fast? You're so prudant, little sis," Edgar said thickly through a mouthful of sandwich. "Don't kill yourself. Think of how tragic the headlines would be. 'Bones Daughter Found Dead by Ink Smears'. Supremely tragic."
"Haha very funny," Amelia said as she leaned over and kissed her brother's cheek. "And don't talk with your mouth full."
"Yes Ma," Edgar grinned.
"Enjoy the rest of your day," Amelia called out over her shoulder as she rushed back to her desk to work.
Edgar watched her go with a sigh, shaking his head. He reached across to an empty table for a discarded newspaper, and did the crossword as he finished his meal, all the while wondering vaguely where their childhood had gone--the days of dragon costumes and tree houses, before Hogwarts--and hoping that as they got older he and Amelia and Joshua wouldn't lose one another in the meantime.
