Who: John Constantine and Martha Jones
What: Reading material
When: Sunday afternoon
Where: The park
Warnings: TBD
Status: Closed/Match up

After the whole pod person thing there had been a definite dip in the things stored in his lock up that retained their magic but some of the things hadn't been drained permanently so there had been magic trickling back into various vessels and John had been there that afternoon to catalog what was salvageable and what was basically junk to be thrown on the trash heap.

On his way out he grabbed some of the books that were stored in there for some research and since he stopped to get some food on the way home he ended up sitting in the park with a cup of coffee with whiskey poured in it sitting beside him on the bench while he was reading a book that was obviously hand bound and written in an odd rusty brown ink. He was having to concentrate a little more than usual to read it with the odd dialect it was written in so he was only occasionally taking sips of his doctored coffee.

Being distracted didn't mean he wasn't paying attention to the people around him though. So when he felt like someone was looking at him a little too long he looked up from the book at them.

It wasn't like Martha spied on people or anything, but traveling with the Doctor meant that she picked up on things a lot easier now - small things were hardly dismissed anyone and big things were worth exploring. In a town like Madison Valley, it meant she was often intrigued by something and today the man reading a strange book was it. When he looked up, she offered a smile.

"Hi." Her London accent rang out as she gave him a small, friendly wave. "Sorry. I was just on my break from the clinic and I was going to a walk to stretch my legs and then I saw you readin' from this book I've never seen before. Don't think they sell those at the local shop." She laughed softly at her back joke. "Don't suppose that's a magic book, is it?"

"Who's asking?" John's own accent was Liverpool mixed with London for having live there so long after he'd left home. He shut the book with his finger inside marking his place. Losing where he was at if he didn't have to was a bother because it took too much time to translate back to where you'd been.

"Because if it was a magic book then naturally I'd have to be suspicious of any motives for wanting to know."

Well, that was an interesting way to reply. Plus it sort of already gave her an answer, but she didn't want to say that out loud. "Well, I'd like to pretend I'm someone very interesting, but I'm only a doctor at the clinic here." She smiled and held out her hand to him, unphased by his subtle warning. "Martha Jones."

"And I asked just because I'm curious. The closest thing I ever ran into magic back home was these women saying they were witches. Turns out they were just another form of aliens, but they were pretty bloody close, I tell you."

Of course it gave her an answer. There was usually a method to his madness on how he reacted eventually so he'd meant to let that out.

"Well Martha Jones, I'm John Constantine." He went ahead and shook her hand with a little bit of a smirk on his face. Fearless ladies who were as good looking as she was were always interesting.

"And who's to say they weren't alien witches? It's possible to be more than one thing."

"That's definitely true, though I wouldn't say it too loud otherwise the Doctor might hear you and give you a piece of his mind. Don't think he particularly believes in magic like other people do." She she loved him for it, even if Martha was still curious about the unknown either way. She could see how it could be shaped within science, but there was always that 'what if' part of the world where she didn't rule out the idea of actual, honest-to-God magic.

"Pretty short sighted to not believe in something real." He wasn't impressed with people that closed themselves off to possibilities. Sure, there were a lot of things out there that were more science based but even magic was science based you just had to know the rules for how it worked.

"It's one of the universal energies and has its own laws and rules. Like gravity, light and everything else."

She listened intently, nodding. Martha thought the whole idea was fascinating, really, and she was sure the Doctor would frown and make some sort of retort that he wasn't short sighted.

"So how does it work, then?." Yes, Martha did take a seat next to him. "When I met the carrionites, they were all about words. Naming things had power, for example. Tried to have William Shakespeare write out a whole spell or whatever. Almost worked too."

"Depends on the magic." He gave up and pulled his finger out of his spot and completely closed the book. "It sounds like yours were using harmonics to affect things. Think of sound waves, you tune them the right way they do different things right? You're a doctor, like using one of those ultrasonic blades. If it's on the right frequency it cuts through the cast but doesn't do anything to the skin because it will only cut things that are a certain hardness."

There was a reason people used words sometimes. You didn't always need to, mostly they were just to help you focus and concentrate but there were some spells you had to do words.

She considered that for a moment. It was a good analogy that she understood. "I think that's sort of what they were doing. Plus a lot of people were listening at the time and taking in the words. Helps when people believe, yeah?"

Martha thought about it for a moment, her mind going to what she knew of magic from television - something she was sure the Doctor would roll his eyes at. "So, there's more types then. I'm guessing there's good and there's bad types of magic. Probably some more dangerous kinds than others." Her eyes went to the slightly creepy book in his hand she was more and more certain was written with something gross.

John was better at making magic understandable than most other mystics. He working on a street level and had had come from the lowest dregs of society originally so he tended to connect things differently than someone raised in the teachings.

"Belief does help but it's not strictly necessary." However having an audience rapt on every word...yeah that could definitely help.

"There's a lot of different sorts. There's a lot of different energy sources out there." He saw her eyes flick to the book and a hint of a smirk appeared on his face. "And yes, I know all of them. Hard to stop them if I don't know what other idiots might pull out of their hat. Keep in mind that one of the easiest sources of energy is someone's life. Even hacks that don't have enough magic talent to light a match can do a lot worse by stealing energy off other things. Like sacrificial animals...or people."

Martha made a face at the idea of sacrificing animals or people. It was the sort of face that you made when you had experience with it rather than just the concept of it being unpleasant.

"So you fight against people who use magic for bad then?" She could stand behind someone like that. "Keepin' people say with the things they don't know go bump in the night." Sort of like the Doctor, she mused to herself.

A sacrifice done for the right reasons brought tons of power but you had to raise the animal, treat it better than you treated your own family and honor it after you killed it. Most people who wanted the power didn't care about doing it right.

"Not really." He leaned back against the bench to study her. She definitely had the earmarks of someone with hero tendencies. That was always a bad sign when one of them showed up in his path. The universe was a huge meddler.

"Look, anyone can fight the people who do a little blood magic and do bad things. Even someone without magic can learn that." He waved a hand around indicating the entire city or possibly world. "I'm what's known as the big guns luv."

"The big guns, huh?" She smiled at that. Bravado wasn't something she shied away from or thought anything negative from - something else she could probably attribute to hanging around the Doctor a lot. "Well, that's good to know then, if there's too much bad magic around town. Don't suppose you've figured out what's keeping us here then, though." Not that she sounded judgmental. There were a lot of smart people under the Dome and so far no one had a clue.

Well there hadn't been any eye rolling or scoffing so she was taking it seriously enough she might remember it if the need came up for him.

"Nope. Not a bit luv. The dome doesn't even register on the mystic scale. Far as I can tell it's the universe's perverse sense of humor and we're like it's experimental snowglobe."

"I've heard people say that about this place before. That it's some strange experiment. Not sure I believe it since if that were true, wouldn't it mean someone's pulling the strings?" She glanced up like she could see the Dome, even though she couldn't, and looked thoughtful. "Been under a few experimental type things before and nothing really felt like this. Though, I suppose there's always a first for everything, yeah?" She looked back down to him and gave him a cheeky grin.

"Don't know if they are and don't know if they aren't. But all for being sealed off somehow we still get supplies and information and now experimental teleport tech that let's us visit other places. I'll take experiment over budgies in a cage. I'm not suited for being a pet." He drummed his fingers thoughtfully on the book in his lap.

Her grin brought back his smirk and he laughed. "Right. You ever want a first with me you just let me know luv. I'm down for just about anything."

She turned to look at him, paused, and then suddenly laughed. "Okay then." She was impressed by his boldness and maybe even reminded her a little of Shakespeare, though Martha suspected telling John that might ignite his ego and he seemed to have a pretty healthy ego already. Martha bumped him in the shoulder lightly with her own.

"I should let you get back to reading that book with who knows what inside." She was still pretty much ignoring what it was written in. As a doctor she thought it might be best not to dwell.

It was a good sign she laughed. There could have been indignation or at attempt at slapping but instead she just laughed. John could work with that.

"I will see you around Martha Jones." The smirk was still on his face as he opened the book back up and started looking for where he'd left off.

[ooc: and wrap!]
