No, Matt couldn't see her tears. But he could smell the salt on her skin, hear the catch in her breath, and feel the racing of her heart. Besides, he wasn't stupid. This was an important day for so many of them. So much sadness was in the air, but also the feeling of celebration.
Smiling, he reached out, giving her forearm a gentle squeeze before nodding, turning his head to the largest part of the crowd. "I told you. I think this was needed. And losing people important to you seemed to be one of the requirements.
"Besides," he added with a soft laugh, "if I've learned anything about Madison Valley, it's that they'll all show up to a party. I think it's a requirement." Especially when she'd mentioned free food. No one in that city turned down free food.
