Belle was walking along with a book in her hand, open, of course, and being read while she walked. She moved easily, dodging people without ever looking up. Her ability to avoid collisions while walking and reading was almost supernatural in nature. She didn't even have to look up to avoid people or objects. She even easily dodged random things that might trip up other people - like casually thrown trash, a dog, a cat or even water falling off a roof.
She missed all of it.
The only time she looked up was when she stopped at the crosswalk to wait for the light. Cars were still new to her and she really didn't know how to handle them. Not yet. She was not afraid of them anymore, and she liked them even. But they were still a little more unpredictable than she liked. Oh, she knew people were the cause, but at least if a horse spooked it had a mind of its own and it was not a new, weird thing for it. A car could lose control and have no real logic behind it.
That worried her.
She looked up and smiled at the person standing at the corner.
