Nights were a lot easier to navigate with a flameless light to help. Hansel had figured out how to use the 'flash light' function on his cell telephone by accidentally blinding himself in bed with it. He was testing it as he was trying to read the local newspaper for any adverts being printed for help wanted. He preferred being outside rather than in the unnaturally cool environment of his living quarters. There were plenty of places he could have gone to read the paper with all the artificial light he wanted, but Hansel was happiest sitting on the bench he'd stumbled into.
He stretched his legs out only to see someone out of the corner of his eye and pulled his feet back in case the man didn't see him.
"I'm sorry about that. I'm trying out this flash light thing on my cell telephone. It isn't a real test when I'm in the room they gave me. There's too much artificial light already."
Hansel had been fond of interacting with others before he'd come to Madison. He missed his sister even though Gretel tended not to want to interact with anyone other than him or paying clients. There wasn't much chance of him finding a job as a witch hunter either. It seemed as if Hansel was going to have to figure out a way to survive without regular income. His education was his own and of little use in this place or time. Could anyone use a guy who knew languages? Was that a trade here?
"I don't suppose you know of anyplace hiring someone who is not very good with electrical technology things? I'm good with languages? I know my regular profession isn't in demand here. I am starting to worry about what I can do to keep myself afloat if I can't even figure out the basics without bothering strangers to help me. I'm not from---well, where I'm from? This place seems like a fantasy in comparison to it. We're nowhere near this level with our machines."
It couldn't hurt to ask the guy for a suggestion, could it? The guy could always say he didn't have one and keep walking.
