The cruise raised a lot of questions for Adam about his relationship with Llewellyn. He liked her, they’d been pretty good friends for a while, and they definitely had physical chemistry. Did he like her enough to attempt another relationship though? The only one he’d had that worked in the past was with Savannah and she left Madison Valley a long time ago. Since then, he’d had some long term flings, probably got closest to something real with Sue, and pretty much written off the thought.
When he woke up in his own bed, he was equal parts relieved and disappointed. Having some space would allow him to figure out his feelings a little more clearly.
He went downstairs and started breakfast, figuring that Star and Sam would be along soon enough. He’d checked in with them a few times during the cruise, knew they were having a good time, but didn’t really spend much time with either of them.
***
Star had a good time on the cruise and pretty much had just run wild with anyone and everyone and had a great time exploring towns, climbing on things she probably wasn’t supposed to and just having fun. Which was why it was probably more than a little weird that she slumped in to the kitchen and flopped down at the table before putting her head down in her arms.
She’d checked to see if Moose and Adam were up on her way downstairs and she wasn’t happy about what she’d found.
***
That was definitely not the Star that Adam was expecting this morning and he looked over from the stove with confusion. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Most days, she bounced into the kitchen for breakfast, far too often waving her wand around and making Adam nervous that she would accidentally blow up something.
He ran through a mental list of things that could cause this sort of reaction and frowned, glancing up when he realized he didn’t hear the familiar heavy footsteps of his housemate.
***
It had been a long time since she’d blown things up on accident. Well, mostly a long time. Okay they weren’t going to talk about the incident with the marshmallows when she tried to make s’mores with her wand so it didn’t count. Especially if no one else had seen it. Barko was more of a danger than she was usually.
”...room’s empty…” Her voice was fairly muffled in her arms since her head was laying on them.
***
Adam barely caught her word, but he heard enough that his heart sunk into his stomach. “Okay, well, maybe he woke up somewhere else,” he said. Just because they’d both woken up in their own beds didn’t mean everyone had.
“And if not, well, it’s not the first time he’s gone home and come back.” There was no reason to panic. Yet. Though if Star meant his room was empty empty, like, all of his things were gone too, that was not a good sign in Adam’s experience.
***
Star raised her head to give Adam a look. She knew the big difference between going home for a visit and probably not coming back or if you did you didn’t come back as the same person. “His room is all gone. Well I mean his stuff is all gone and it looks like no one lives there. It’s a total hotel room waiting on an occupant thing.”
And it sucked. Not just because Sam was the one who let Star get away with murder while Adam tried to give her boundaries...she tended to ignore the boundaries anyway and she liked Adam too.
***
“Well… shit,” Adam said. He might be the one who tried to give Star boundaries, but not swearing wasn’t one of them.
He turned off the stove, moving the eggs away from the burner, and went to sit next to her, resting a hand on her back. “I’m sorry. You’re still stuck with me though.” Maybe that would make her laugh. Or at least smile. Even though he’d been the one to take her in all that time ago, he knew that she and Sam were pretty close.
***
“Not really funny Adam.” Star poked him in the side with her finger and rolled her eyes. There were times when you could see the very serious Star underneath the bright and easily excitable exterior and it was showing right now. Back home she’d helped deal with Toffee and his attempts to destroy magic, helped her family and lost Glossaryck. She wasn’t quite the completely crazy person she’d used to be.
“People leave back home too you know. It’s just Moose has been here a long time.”
***
At least he tried.
“I know,” Adam said. “Long enough that I didn’t expect this. I guess I need to let his family know.” He was pretty sure that Dean wasn’t going to take it well. And he felt really bad for Mary.
“C’mere,” he said, pulling her into a hug. “I’ll take the day off today. We’ll do something fun.” Hopefully having missed two weeks for the impromptu cruise wouldn’t lose him his job. He figured that his boss would understand though.
***
Yeah. He did and that got him points from Star and a hug in return. “I’m not sure what’s fun right now but I’m glad you’re taking a day off.” She really knew if they just got out there and did something she’d end up having fun somehow, it was just hard to imagine right now.
Movie day was out though. That was a Moose thing. She and Adam had to do something that wasn’t a Moose thing.
***
Adam tried to think of something that Star would find fun. He was too old to go to the arcade, so after a moment, he suggested the next best thing. “How about the casino,” he said. They had an area that was open to teens and he was able to go there without issue. Maybe it would make her feel grown up.
“And tomorrow, if you want, you can come to work with me and help me give tours.” His boss would probably not be a fan of that, but Adam knew that he wouldn’t get fired over it.
***
“The casino’s okay, oh or we could do the jet boats!” Outside and all fast were definitely her speed right now. And maybe she could figure out a way to use her wand to make them go faster. Not that she thought Adam would really let her do that, he had a thing about not crashing vehicles especially if there were other people in them. Which...okay fair point.
“And I will totally come give tours. That will be fun!”
***
“Let’s have some breakfast and then we can head over to the casino,” Adam suggested. “We’ll do the jet boats tomorrow.” As long as he didn’t get in trouble for taking a day off on the heels of missing two weeks of work with the cruise.
He would probably regret offering to take Star to work with him, but oh well. He wanted her to smile.
***
Ugh indoors it was then. But Star guessed that maybe Adam needed some special time too and he probably didn’t think the boats were as fun as she did.
“All right. Casino for the win.” She kissed him on the cheek and grinned. “Come on I’ll help you finish making breakfast. I promise I won’t use the wand.”
