Paige didn’t really know anyone in the neighbourhood. The elderly couple across the cul-de-sac had commented on the flowers out front that she couldn’t take any credit for, but otherwise in the years since she and Lucas had bought the house she hadn’t really gotten to know anyone who lived nearby. But she knew one thing and that was that the boy who had been her husband’s ward, became hers once he’d disappeared, wound up not really needing a guardian anymore at all but by now they’d spent so many years living together that neither of them seemed to have given that much thought, had his best friend living just down the street.
So when she was looking for him, couldn’t find him around the house and he wasn’t answering her text messages, that was the first place she thought to look. Which she only did because it was clear her messages were getting through and she knew that his state of mind since coming back to town was unstable at best. Their house was fully warded with magic inside and out because of whatever had happened and when he went completely silent on her, Paige worried like she’d never done before he’d gone home last month.
Single motherhood meant she had to back up the twins to take them down the street with her, which wound up making the two minute walk take a half hour with two toddlers in tow, right up to the front door of the house she really hoped was the right one and ringing the bell. She wasn’t even sure if anyone was home, but it was worth the try before she called Adam in to go hunting around town.
