For better or for worse, Pepper had woken up on the couch in her home with Dwight, arms wrapped around a pillow instead of her daughter. At first, she'd thought herself back in New York and she'd just fallen asleep on the couch instead of the bed she'd shared with Tony. It was clear to her now that a big part of her disconnect was that it had been five years for her. It was heartbreaking, but she knew that not saying anything, not trying to explain, would just make it worse. They were all stuck in limbo right now because of her. Because she couldn't choose between the two lives she'd lived. It was an impossible choice, one that would hurt someone no matter how she chose.
She got up and busied herself making coffee in the kitchen. Dwight would be down soon enough if he'd woken up in their bed, or home soon enough if not. Pepper wasn't sure she'd have the courage to have this conversation any other time than right now and she was selfish enough to have it even if it wasn't the right timing for him. The cruise itself had been stressful for the three of them in ways she wasn't interested in continuing. It was clear that she wouldn't be able to have both of them and she knew she needed to make a choice. She just couldn't make that choice sleeping on the very opposite side of the bed from Dwight.
"Morning," she said softly when he came in. Pepper poured him a fresh cup and handed it over. "I think it's time we talked." Those were never words anyone wanted to hear and she hated that she was saying them, but they did and it was long overdue.
