He’d woken with a fright again that morning, one again had to brush off Cassie’s concern without straight out lying to her. He didn’t want to do that, but he didn’t want to talk about what had happened at home, either. He didn’t want to talk to anyone about it, just wanted to be left in peace to learn to live with it on his own. At least when he realized they’d landed at another port he had a good distraction, slapped on a smile and announced the gardens were calling him before just grabbing her hand and pulling her along. She’d been showing an interest in them and he was eager to spend some time among new plants.
After getting the information they needed about them, he’d made her spend hours at every one he could manage, always following the pull of plants that felt too familiar in a way he didn’t want to acknowledge.
Briar was in high spirits when they made it to the last garden on the list. Spirits that were quickly dashed when recognition set in. It wasn’t an exact copy, it wasn’t even that similar, but the garden bore an uncomfortable likeness to the Yanjingyi Imperial Gardens. It was beautiful, beyond expression, and he felt the happiness of the plants around him, but they did little to ease the weight that settled in his chest, tried to push the air from him.
The Briar who had been cheerful and excited all day faded quickly as he led the way down the paths, always half expecting to come across the unique rose Rosethorn had left behind as a gift.
