Pepper looked a mess, like she'd been crying for days. There wasn't any fixing that, and she knew if she delayed going home she would just lose the courage to do so. It wasn't an easy situation to be in by any means and as much as she wanted to swear up, down and sideways that it didn't change a thing, that would have been a lie. She owed Dwight the truth, all of what happened in the years she'd been in her world and the fact that her family there had followed her here. Even though she was physically and emotionally exhausted, the conversation couldn't wait.
As she walked home from the apartment complex, she tried to figure out what to say or even what she wanted. Pepper could honestly say that she just hurt and that she wasn't in the right mind at all to make any sort of decisions beyond laying out the facts. The part of her that loved Dwight wanted to stay with him here and let go of Tony, but could she really let him go? Could she really be Morgan's mother from afar? It wasn't fair to Dwight if she were to leave him for Tony, not to mention what would happen with Ryder. Just as it wasn't fair for Tony to arrive here after dying, to have this second chance to be with Morgan, and they weren't the same family they were in New York. It was complicated and messy and cruel in ways she wasn't entirely convinced she could survive.
Without any of her personal effects, Pepper was left to use the key they kept underneath the purple turtle lawn ornament they kept near to their front door. It had been an arts and crafts project of Kate's from one of the times she'd been small and she hadn't been able to just set it aside. So they'd re-purposed it and it made her happy to know it made her friend and sort of daughter happy, too. Now it was a small comfort that made her smile before she quietly let herself into the house. Her feet were sore from walking barefoot the whole way, but she didn't stop to consider that. Instead, she carefully made her way upstairs so that she wouldn't wake Ryder or Fate. She even did her best to carefully open the bedroom door so she wouldn't startle Dwight but that might have been a lost cause.
"Honey?" Pepper said softly, her voice sore and scratchy. It certainly sounded like she'd been crying for days.
