Violence was the building block all of Hansel's life was built on. He had never known peace long enough to have it sink in for him. The childhood he'd shared with his sister and their parents before they had been left in the woods to fend for themselves? That was more of a dream to him than a remembered reality. All he could think about were the hunts he'd survived thanks to his complete faith in his sister to back him up always. Those hunts were his real past. Witches weren't something Hansel wanted in his life. They were simply a certainty for him, past, present, and future.

"You interested in a hunting trip?"

Deirdre had been easy enough to find using the device she told him was a telephone. They called them 'cell phones' which made some sense to Hansel as they did appear to be made in the familiar rectangular shape of a cell. Hansel and Gretel had spent more than a few nights locked in cells courtesy of dishonorable villagers or unreasonable constables. Some people had no idea how to have fun; Hansel wasn't interested in running afoul of those people in Madison Valley. He had a feeling the cells in this future place were a lot harder to escape than any he and his sister had shared.

"I used the cell telephone to find you," Hansel held up the device to show her the dot which flashed to show her last location as posted on the message network, "I am still learning this thing. It can be tricky. Witches though? Those are the same everywhere. They come in two flavors, sometimes three: good, bad, and about to turn bad. I hear this portal goes to a time I'm more comfortable with and there's witches. I like both of these things very much. It doesn't make up for you having to show me how to get by in this time, but it's a start maybe? Something to break up the boredom?"

Hansel was familiar with the aspect of boredom, too. His world might have been more simple in terms of its technological advancement, but it was still filled with people and villages and people who lived in villages. There were only a few flavors of those the same as there were with witches. They tended to be tedious to deal with after a time. Hansel and Gretel made sure to head out of a town as fast as they could following a job. The longer they stayed, the more likely they were to start something unpleasant for those people in those towns. They didn't do well with the routine. He had a feeling Deirdre didn't either.

"The phones are useful, aren't they?" She mused as she gave Hansel a half smile, eyes glinting in the light, she'd looked forward to seeing this portal. But she hadn't made time until now.

"You do not owe me butt I will not argue taking a look around. It could be just what I need, after all." She wasn't sure what they'd find but she didn't care either.

Trouble was trouble.

Deirdre was the rebel princess, she avoided as many royal findings as she could manage in her life.

Modern equipment appeared designed to make life as easy as possible for people. Hansel couldn't argue it did help with time management. He would have taken at least an hour to find her if he were tracking her the way he would have in his own time whereas the cell telephone allowed him to walk toward her spot on the screen map in less than a quarter hour.

"Pretty sure the only purpose all equipment serves in this time is to help people be as lazy as possible. I'm not complaining -my sister would most likely- but it is a little more than 'convenient' when everything is more or less done for you with the touch of a button or flip of a switch."

Hansel hadn't gone through the portal up to this point though he had went to it to watch others pass through and return. There were no signs of trauma or damage to anyone going into the portal or coming out of it. He figured whatever was powering the door to the other place? It couldn't be too evil or it was seriously failing in its intentions.

"No one seems to be any worse for wear going into or coming back out of the portal. You want to lead or follow?"

Gretel was more than a match for Hansel as a fighter; there was no reason to view a woman as less capable in Hansel's experience. He figured Deirdre could hold her own, too. The woman had taught him plenty of the modern world in a quick span of time. She also carried herself with a wild quality to her stance which made him believe she was a fighter wherever she called home.

"Oh certainly." she noted with a smirk, "but some things are made easier with technology. While I much prefer things old fashioned, this isn't too bad to have as a backup." Deirdre was amused at all the tech.

"Doesn't matter to me." though she did step forward to take point, just because she was often the one who took the lead back home. This was just easier to continue on.

Deirdre was all wildness and edges. She didn't belong to the same school of thought her sisters did. She didn't want the throne, even if they could have it as women, and she didn't want power or men tripping over themselves for her.

She preferred to break faces and slice off bits.

Falling into step to Deirdre's right flank, Hansel said, "I could get used to the ease of this world. I worry it would leave me soft for when I got home though and that? I can't have that happen. My work is too dangerous. My life is too dangerous. If anything happened to my sister because I had gotten lazy? I'd kill myself."

Suicide was no sin in Hansel's eyes. Some people realized their lives weren't worth the strain on the world. Those people who chose to take themselves out as a result? They were heroic in their own way. He knew he'd told some who were cursed it would be easier for them to take their own life than wait for their curse to claim them.

Witches couldn't always be caught or killed before a curse could take hold or go into effect.

The good guys didn't always win. That was the sad truth of the world of witch-hunting and the world as it was in general. Hansel and Gretel fought the best they could for the people who hired them. They didn't hold back. Every hunt was given the same level of intensity as the hunt before it. No matter how much they put in though---sometimes they still failed to save everyone.

Casualties happened in wars. That was the nature of war.

"I'll flank you. Give me a signal if you see something before I do."

Hansel followed Deirdre through the portal into what amounted to being a swamp. He could smell the familiar rot of an earlier age city. People could be heard in the distance. It was the lack of nature sounds which triggered his nerves to jingling a warning bell.

"No animals. That's rarely good for me. Is it good for you?"

It was worth asking. For all Hansel knew, Deirdre regularly scared the local wildlife away just by walking into their territory.

"From everything I've been told, you don't take home anything you've learned here." she pushed her hair behind her ear as she looked around, "So you will not be lazy upon your return." she said carefully as she glanced back at him.

Deirdre moved easily through the portal, eyes flicking around. She paused as she stepped across, noting where things are, and what people are around the gates. She didn't notice anything off, not yet anyway.

She was used to old towns, too, so that was alright. She took in a deep breath and let it out. Swampy, old, dirty. The usual. It was fine. "That's rarely good for me, too. I don't generally scare animals off." not unless she was trying, no.

"Same. I usually aim for the opposite since if I attract the animals to me? I've got a better chance of eating that night."

Hansel knew if anyone could understand what it was to fear starving if game wasn't available, it would be this woman. Deirdre had an old-world feeling to her which put him at ease even as he realized he should have been on edge around her since she definitely could be a threat. He was fine with her being a threat on his side. Gretel was a threat to everyone except him. It was almost like being with his sister to inspect a situation with Deirdre.

There was a lot of comfort in knowing the possibility existed for Hansel to return home to Gretel with absolutely no knowledge of this experience. Some men wanted to have all the adventures possible in their lives. He'd had enough adventures for ten lifetimes by the time he was ten-years-old. He'd gladly give up the memories of Madison Valley or walking through strange portals to strange cities for the comforting familiarity of being too hot, too sweaty, and too tired at the side of his sister.

"I hope you're right. I wouldn't mind going home without having any clue I was ever here. I wonder what happens if we die here. Do we die at home? Do we just vanish? Or do we go back home like a blink? You heard anything about that while I'm looking for any sign of an enemy?"
