Briar & Cassie BR
It helped way more than she could ever say that he understood what she was feeling. He just got it, without words or explanation. Cassie wasn't even sure she could really explain it well without feeling like she was some kind of idiot. Plus, putting it into words just made it more real and she didn't want to push anyone away despite her fears over them being taken away. The last time she'd lashed out, it had cost her a lot of good will and she wasn't ready to lose what she already had worked so hard to get back.
"It helps," she said quietly as she reached for his hand. "That you get it." Cassie could try to convey it, at least a little. She just didn't want to get too sappy or anything because they were just mates as he liked to say. Anything more than that and it was just going to get complicated in a way she didn't want because it put her at risk of being hurt if he ever got sent home. Or vice versa.
"You wanna roast a marshmallow for me?" Otherwise she was definitely going to get sappy. "Got anything against kissing me after I eat all that sugar?" It wasn't quite her usual playful tone, but it was the best she could do for now. And it was her sort of indirect way of asking to pass the time that way.
