Since there was only a month left in the school year, Trixie had convinced her mother (with some help from Lucifer) that she didn’t need to enroll for the rest of the year. It meant that she had plenty of free time to explore this weird little town. She knew her mom didn’t really want her wandering around on her own a lot, but she was ten years old and perfectly capable of taking care of herself, so she slipped out when she got the opportunity.
The park was fun, but since all the other kids in town were in school, there was no one to play with, so she’d decided to head over to the bakery for a slice of chocolate cake. Her mom wasn’t there to make her eat vegetables first which made it that much better.
She could barely see over the counter, so she had to go on her tiptoes to pay for her cake and she lost her balance, nearly knocking into the lady waiting behind her. “Oops, sorry,” she said. At least she hadn’t dropped her cake.

Paige didn’t often have a sweet-tooth so to speak, but she did like to indulge in a sweet treat once and awhile. Piper’s food was by far the best, but she couldn’t exactly bother her sister to whip her up a dessert whenever she asked for it. Besides, there were plenty of places in town to find yourself a decent donut or piece of cake or whatever you were craving of the sweet variety. However, she did happen to have a preference for a certain bakery and when her break came at work, she wandered over to see if she could pick herself up a piece of cake or a decent sized brownie to fill that sugar void.
Arriving, she ended up behind a young girl...a girl who should have been in school actually. Paige watched the child curiously as she ordered herself a slice of chocolate cake, standing on her tiptoes to pay for the it. It was in that instant that the child became unbalanced and almost fell right into Paige. The woman instinctively reached out to steady the young girl, but somehow she managed to right herself. The action alone proved to Paige she was certainly the age to be in school and not ordering chocolate cake...by herself.
“It’s okay, sweetie,” Paige assured her quickly. There was no harm done and the girl had managed to hold on to her chocolate cake. “Are you alright?”

Trixie turned and gave the woman a grin, displaying a few missing teeth. She was getting closer to having a full set of permanent teeth, but not quite there yet. “I’m fine!” she said. “I have cake.” Cake made everything better.
“What are you getting?” she asked. The whole ‘don’t talk to strangers’ lesson hadn’t really stuck, despite growing up with two cops as parents. Trixie was a little too trusting most of the time, but she figured that no one would hurt her if they knew her parents were detectives. Plus Lucifer was around and he wouldn’t let anyone hurt her.
***
The smile was absolutely adorable and Paige felt her heart melt at the sight, particularly at the missing teeth. She could not be much older than ten and maybe even younger was Paige’s best guess. “You definitely do have cake. That’s a big piece too. Are you really going to eat that all by yourself?” Paige asked gently. She was tentatively feeling out if the girl was in fact by herself or if there was a parent nearby. Technically, the girl should be in school, but Paige would settle for a responsible adult to watch her at this point.
At the question, Paige turned to look over what the cases held. She honestly hadn’t thought much about what particular sweet treat she was getting...she just knew she wanted something. “Well, I don’t know actually. Have any suggestions for me?” She asked, turning back to the young girl before. “You like chocolate cake so you might be a kind of expert.”
***
“Chocolate cake is the best,” Trixie said, her face shifting into a Very Serious expression. “Followed by any other kind of cake. Except carrot. Vegetables do not belong in cake. Then cookies are best after that.”
Yes, she had Opinions about sweets and she wasn’t afraid to share them.
“I might eat it all myself. Or I might share it with my mom or Lucifer.” Maybe. If she found her friend, she would definitely offer. Her mom would probably not be as cool about her mid day cake binge though.
***
Paige could not help, but smile at the exclamation and sudden shift to a very serious expression. It was adorable and completely reminiscent of childhood innocence and a time long past for Paige, but obviously not for the young girl before her explaining her hierarchy of sweets, particularly cake. She couldn’t remember if she ever had such an understanding of dessert or if she’d been so captivated with something else entirely. “Well, you certainly know a lot about cake. And definitely no carrot cake then,” Paige replied, shaking her head.
Lucifer? Seriously? The devil? Paige knew there were a lot of crazy things in Madison Valley, but she had yet to come across the devil who was apparently here as well. And...this little girl and her mother knew him. “You are going to share your cake with the...devil?” Paige couldn’t help, but look somewhat skeptical.
***
“He’s my best friend,” Trixie said. “He works with my mom at home.”
Lucifer would disagree with that assessment of their relationship, but it wasn’t going to deter Trixie from believing it or telling anyone who she met that it was the case. “They like each other, but grown ups are dumb.”
That was something else Trixie had a lot of opinions about.
***
Her best friend? That was...different to put it lightly. Paige didn’t think the devil had friends, but apparently a version of him did and one of them was this young girl in front of her that loved chocolate cake. Go figure. At least Paige was a bit more open-minded than most people might have been about this devil reference. Being a witch helped with that. It made her more flexible about how much she was willing to believe.
“I didn’t know the devil had friends. I guess I’m learning a lot today between that and cake,” Paige replied, shaking her head. At the mention of them liking each other, Paige couldn’t help, but crack another grin. The young girl was smart. Paige would give her that, but children often were capable of seeing things even when adults didn’t want them to. “So, are you going to go share that cake with them now? Or do you want to do me the honor of picking out a piece of cake for me. However, unfortunately, I won’t be sharing it with the devil. This is all for me.”
***
“His name is Lucifer,” Trixie said. Yes, she knew that most people thought he was the devil, but he was just her friend and she didn’t like it when people were mean to her friends.
She shrugged. “I dunno. Maybe. Or I might eat it all myself.” Trixie’s eyes were often bigger than her stomach, even when it came to cake, but she wouldn’t let that stop her from trying. “I can help you pick a piece of cake though!”
It occurred to her that she really wasn’t supposed to be talking to strangers. Oops. This lady was nice though. “What’s your name?” she asked. “I’m Trixie.” If she knew her name, then she wasn’t a stranger, no matter what her mom said.
***
“Okay. Lucifer it is,” Paige replied, nodding. She didn’t know if she would ever run into this said “Lucifer”, but apparently it was best not to call him the devil. Well, at least Trixie seemed to see him more as human than a fallen angel.
“I plan to eat mine by myself.” Paige wasn’t embarrassed to admit it either. She had a craving for something sweet, but more so, she wasn’t sure who she would share it with anyway. “And yes, if you could help that would be great.” Because Paige honestly didn’t know what to choose.
“I’m Paige. It’s nice to meet you Trixie. Or like the Queen of Cake might be better seeing you know a lot about it,” she added the last part as a small joke. “So, which do you think I should get?”
***
Trixie looked at the display case carefully before saying, “Chocolate. Obviously.” It really wasn’t even a question. If there was only one piece left and she wanted it, she would have suggested something else, but since she already had her cake, it was okay for Paige to get a slice.
“Do you know Lucifer?” she asked. “Or my mom? Her name’s Chloe Decker.”
***
Paige knew she could have guessed that was what Trixie would suggest, but she thought she would inquire about which dessert to choose anyway. With a nod, Paige moved to counter and put her order in for a piece of the chocolate cake and emphasized that a big piece would be a tad more favorable. The woman nodded and carefully sliced off a piece of cake for Paige before just as carefully placing it into a plastic container and than a small white paper bag for further protection.
Paige handed the woman the money and accepted her change. “Actually, I don’t think I’ve met either your mom or Lucifer yet,” Paige admitted as she slipped the change into her wallet. “But there are a lot of refugees here so it’s not really surprising.
***
“My mom’s a detective at home, but they won’t let her be here,” Trixie said. “So she works somewhere else. She used to be an actress too!” Hopefully Chloe wasn’t expecting to have any secrets around here because Trixie had no concept of keeping them. Unless they involved her getting chocolate cake. She was not above bribery.
She grinned again. “I should go home and eat my cake,” she said. “I hope you like yours!”
***
The girl certainly did not have any restraint when it came to talking about her mother’s business, but that was all kids in a way. Paige merely nodded when she finished. Maybe she would run into Trixie’s mom at some point. There were a lot of parties around here after all.
The girl grinned again and then promptly declared she was heading home to eat her cake while telling Paige to hopefully enjoy her own. Paige smiled in return. “Thanks to your help, I’m sure I will.”
