Who: Sombra and Reileen When: Early Friday Morning Where: Starbucks/Online What: Online Shenanigans Warnings: Language? TBD? Status: Closed/In-Progress (TBC in Comments)
Reileen was sitting out at Starbucks, laptop open, a giant mug of coffee sitting before her. She didn’t like it, much, because the coffee at Garin’s was more delicious. But she was here now and Starbucks was what was available while she’d ducked out of the lab for awhile. She needed the fresh air or she was going to turn into a hermit. She’d had a lot of fun with Garin taking down dinosaurs, that was a first even for her.
It was a delightful first.
Her eyes flicked to the corner of her screen and she sighed. It was only a matter of time before she was visited by the resident hackers in the community. She’d been careful, and was careful, nothing on the laptop or anything connected to the outside world was important. Or secret. The side effect of being in a world where Virtual and AI technology was a mainstay and you worked in Biomedical Engineering, Virtual Reality torture and other things. You protected yourself with a billion layers and left nothing to chance. Here most of her work was mathematical in nature, working on what looked like virtual reality for medical purposes. Nothing nefarious. At all. She swears.
The corner of her screen blinked again and she finally opened it. ”And I considered myself blessed for being left in peace for so long. Goodness.. She didn’t know which it was yet, but, she knew there was a few around.
It was always only just a matter of time when it came to Sombra. She enjoyed challenges. There were so few anymore in Madison Valley. Those that were a challenge were ones Sombra knew and had poked around with on numerous occasions. As enjoyable as it was to listen to Church complain or watch Seymour find his way out of her loops, Sombra only pushed them so far.
It was one of the many downfalls when you found yourself emotionally connected to others. Truthfully, Sombra wouldn’t trade the feelings, though. She had gone so many years without them, without people who cared about her the way they did, that she didn’t want to lose it any time soon.
That didn’t mean that she hesitated to needle and poke at others, though. They were free reign and lurk Sombra did.
I’ve been a busy woman, Reileen. What can I say? I needed a few minutes to stretch and you just so happened to be within my reach. Enjoying your coffee?
Reileen only sighed and lifted her mug, taking a sip before she started a reply. This place was never too boring, that was for sure. She was cautious about her work, so everything important was tucked away safely. Some was even backed up to a replica stack for safety. She wasn’t sure it would work right but close enough, she figured.
Enjoying a poke around, are you? I do hope so. she leaned back for a moment, and no, I am not. It is coffee, though, and will suffice for now. she didn’t bother trying to track Sombra back, it wasn’t a valuable use of her time. After all, she knew she was in the dome.
Instead she moved the window to the side so she could plug away at her code while she chatted with her. She lifted a hand to wave away someone coming to check if she needed more coffee. She did not. She also looked rather unconcerned about Sombra’s intrusion into her system, where as many people would look around, she just settled back to work.
Sombra’s own expression read as amused. It was always fun to stumble on another tech-savvy individual within the system. She knew of them, tended to keep at least a partial track on them, but only dug deep when it was necessary.
When she felt the need to have some fun at the expense of another. That was truly life.
Si. The coffee here can be bland, though it is exactly as you say. It’s coffee. Perhaps you just need a more attractive individual brewing it for you. Pleasantry for the eyes and all.
It was followed by a ridiculous emoji laughing and rolling back and forth. Completely unnecessary but also very much so.
What are those little fingers working on today?
She hadn’t peeked. Not yet.
Reileen allowed a smirk, ”Yes well, a handsome face does make any meal more delightful, isn’t that a universal truth?” she didn’t bother with emojis, she found them useless and rather silly. But she didn’t say anything about them because she had no desire to be flooded with them either.
”Biomedical engineering, as it is my speciality.” she answered honestly because it wasn’t hidden. Or a secret. She was a little surprised Sombra hadn’t poked around yet, but she wasn’t going to argue the point either.
She hit save, then looked over at the window again, waiting for the reply from the other tech-savvy woman. She chose to be amused at this rather than angry, though she didn’t like being surprised.
"Biomedical? Very impressive, chica. Muy inteligente, si?" Sombra would have chuckled. It would have been light and casual with a sincere tone. Sincere, but sure and melodic. She remained quiet, though. Sipping at her own coffee and hardly stirring, she enjoyed watching those she spoke with. Though she was sure Reileen knew where she was within the establishment, part of the fun was the guessing game.
The game of cat and mouse worked just as well. Sombra was careful with who she poked and pulled, though. She was quick on her feet, good with weapons, and always left herself a backdoor, but she knew to be careful.
You never know just who was living in this town anymore.
"Anything specific? Perhaps you need an extra set of eyes. Not everyone's quick like us." Though she didn't know much on the medical front, Sombra knew the code behind many things. She knew what the coding said and did; how it felt before becoming something tangible to others who didn't fully appreciate what it was.
Fingers in her gauntlet twitched a bit at the thought.
