Diego had been in Madison almost a month. In the grand scheme of things, that wasn't very long, really, but it felt like a lifetime. He'd been pulled from his own reality, and even though he didn't know what was going to happen once Five teleported them all out of the Icarus Theatre, he wanted to be there. With his siblings, saving the world. Hopefully saving the world.
Instead he was here, trapped in this weird ass town under a mysterious dome. It didn't sit well with him, even though he had a job and was making friends. He'd just finished a shift at work, and decided to stop off at Lou's before going home. He'd suggested he and Klaus and Vanya get a place together, and he very much wanted to do that, but it hadn't happened yet. They needed money to buy a place. And the thought of going home to his empty apartment just left him feeling empty and depressed.
A drink or three would help. Hopefully. He slid onto a stool at the bar and nodded to the bartender. Hawklike eyes glanced around the room, taking in the people and gauging the threat level while he waited for the bartender to take his order.
***
Vex liked Lou's. It was usually busy, but not like Verdant or Den of Diosysus. It had a different sort of atmosphere than those two places, too. So he liked it well enough. He had been to Verdant recently, too, so he decided to give Lou's a chance for this round of drinking. He slid onto a stool near Diego's, and ordered a whiskey along with a shot of tequila. Because why not get started on the right foot, right?
He nodded at the man a few seats down, before downing the shot of tequila shortly after it was placed in front of him. "Hello," he offered the man. He could be friendly from time to time. Usually. When he put his mind to it.
"What brings you here?"
***
Diego shrugged. "Boredom, mostly," he said. He could have reached out to Jo and see if she wanted to get together when she got off work, but that would be a few hours yet anyway. So here he was, and while he wasn't drowning his sorrows or anything like that it probably seemed like he was.
"You got any tips for a recent arrival, what to do for fun around here?" he asked. Might as well see if the guy had any suggestions. he looked like he might know his way around town better than Diego did.
***
"Boredom leads a man to drink," he said. He was bored himself, which was why he was at Lou's in the first place. And drinking always helped relieve him of his boredom a bit. A little bit, anyway. And yes, Vex had been in town a bit longer than Diego had. By almost two years. Which was a bit surprising to him, honestly. He knew he definitely hadn't been expecting to be in town that long.
He shrugged a bit at Diego's question, though. "You're looking at it, mate." Then, as an afterthought, "If you get the right job, though, that could be fun." Vex worked at Den of Dionysus, which was perfect for him. He really liked it there, and it was never the same thing happening. He preferred it, actually. "And there are loads of parties."
***
"Not much of a party goer. That's more my sister's thing," he said thinking of Allison. He shrugged the thought away. No use worrying about a sibling who wasn't in town. He had enough to worry about with Vanya.
He sighed, sipped his drink. "I'm looking into getting a job at the guns and ammo place. Neil's Creek?" Guns weren't his thing, but he preferred that to working at WalMart or something.
***
"I have not been there before," he admitted. "Weapons aren't really my thing. I have a different skill set." His being a Mesmer meant he didn't really need to use guns or many other weapons. It wasn't that he was against them, he just didn't use them much, if at all. "But I am sure the place isn't a too terribly bad place to work. Beats some of the other places."
He didn't mind his job in the slightest, but he wasn't certain if Diego would want to work at a strip club. It was certainly possible, as he didn't know the man. But...
"Are you good with weapons, then?"
***
Diego moved his arm, pulling his jacket back, revealing his harness. "Knives are my thing," he said. He could use a variety of weapons, Father insisted on it, but he was most comfortable and proficient with knives.
He didn't mention that he could control the trajectory when he threw a blade. Some things were better left unsaid. And hopefully no one in this damn town would ever have to find out what he could do.
***
"Knives, huh?" He studied the weapon that Diego had shown him, and nodded. "Knives seem like they give you more control than a gun." He wasn't positive about that, though, as he wasn't too good with any kind of weapon. Then, after considering what to say next, "I am a mesmer. I can control people."
He wasn't exactly sure what had compelled him to tell Diego this, but he decided that Diego seemed a bit trustworthy. A little bit. And it wasn't as though he was hiding the fact that he was a mesmer. Is a mesmer. He would willingly tell people, willingly use his abilities on people. So why did it matter if he told this person?
***
"Like influence their thoughts and actions?" He'd never heard of a mesmer, but it sounded a lot like Allison and what she could do. She had to utter specific words, but she could influence people and they never knew what happened. It was kind of a cool trick, really.
Diego was a good person to tell, because whether or not a mesmer was like Allison, he wasn't shocked by super powers. All his siblings had them. Even Vanya.
***
He nodded a bit at Diego's question, "I suppose you could say that. I can actually make someone do whatever it is I want them to do. It's kind of... control of the nervous system?" He was bad at explaining things, he understood that. Especially with something that came as naturally to him as his mesmer abilities. It just came naturally to him. It was hard to explain something that he'd always been able to do.
"Watch," he said, after a moment. He looked toward the bartender, and there was a slight hand motion from Vex. The bartender immediately put down what he was doing, and poured both Diego and Vex a shot of tequila. Vex offered the bartender a smile, "Thanks, love." He then pushed one of the shots toward Diego.
***
Diego watched, nodded when it was done. "That's cool. My sister can do that." Allison's power worked slightly differently but more or less the same. "And I have a brother that talked to the dead. Another one jumps through time." He didn't feel inclined to mention Luther's talent because he'd just as soon forget about Luther, and he wouldn't mention Ben because he was dead, or Vanya because her power was fucking scary.
"My power is with my knives. I can make them go where I want them to go. 100 percent accurate." He never missed.
***
He arched an eyebrow at Diego's words, "You never miss?" That wasn't really too surprising, if his siblings had abilities as well. "And is your brother Klaus?" He had met Klaus before, had a few drinks with the man. He wasn't exactly sure what made him think Diego and Klaus were siblings, it was just a hunch.
"I do wish I was better with weapons," he said after a moment. "But I suppose I don't really need to be if I can control someone who is."
***
"I never miss," he confirmed. He could display his power in action if Vex wanted to see. "Klaus is my brother. Can't you see the family resemblance?" he said with a smirk. "We were both adopted. There's seven of us, total." Actually 43. But dear dead daddy only managed to acquire seven of them.
Diego gave him a sideways look. "Don't even think about it." He said, his voice cold. "I'm no one's puppet." And while the power the man had didn't phase him, he didn't want to be the one under unsolicited control.
***
Vex arched an eyebrow at Diego. "I wasn't thinking about it," he replied, honestly. "I am not in need of guns at the moment." Of course, now that Diego had mentioned it, he was thinking about it.
But he really had no need for any sort of weapon at the moment, so he let the thought leave his mind.
"I haven't used my abilities much here, anyway."
***
"Good. Keep it that way." Diego was slightly suspicious now. Not worried, really. Just suspicious. But also willing to let that annoyance go in the name of enjoying a drink.
