Now that she had a real job, Katniss found that she had less time to spend with the people she cared about here in Madison Valley. Admittedly, there weren’t a tremendous number of them, in part because she’d already lost too many to the whims of the dome and in part because she generally sucked at making friends. Haymitch was one of the few that she would always find time for though, so she stopped by with some brownies from the bakery after a shift at Bad Axe.
She was happy to find him at home and greeted him with a kiss on the cheek. “I brought chocolate,” she said, holding up the bag with a smile. “And I won’t even tell Darcy if you don’t want to share.”
***
“You’ve always been my favourite” Haymitch told her with a smile after giving her a hug and closing the door behind them, “How you been sweetheart? Work okay?” he asked her as he led them to the kitchen, he figured he’d make them tea to enjoy with the chocolate treats.
Haymitch definitely understood busy, since he’d gotten his ‘official’ qualification he’d been a lot more in demand - funnily enough a lot of people needed therapy in Madison. So seeing Katniss was definitely a highlight of the day.
***
“It’s really good,” Katniss said as she followed him into the kitchen. “I wasn’t sure if I’d like having a real job after spending all that time supporting us with my hunting, but I’m enjoying it.” She liked getting to use her archery skills for something other than killing animals, even though she only did that for food, and to her surprise, she was enjoying the opportunity to get to know more people.
Despite how long she’d been here, her circle was still fairly small. “How about you? Things going okay with your counseling?” She was so proud of him for what he’d accomplished over the past five years. They both were living lives that were a far cry from those in District Twelve.
***
“I’m glad to hear it” Haymitch said honestly, he’d wondered how she’d adjust to it but it was something she loved to do and he had hoped once she settled in she’d be great with teaching others too. “They’re lucky to have you” he told her, with a smile as he put the kettle on and got some mugs from the cupboard.
“Yeah, I’m busier than ever. Got a couple of new groups going as well as the regular ones” It was very different for Haymitch, he had experience with the addiction groups but the general counselling ones were a new thing for him. But he was qualified now and he wanted to help.
***
Katniss had been to the house enough that she knew where the plates and napkins were kept, so while Haymitch was getting the kettle started, she went to the cupboards to get out what they needed to enjoy their brownies.
“I would say that your people are luckier to have you,” she said. “You’re making a really important impact on their lives.” Shooting a bow and arrows wasn’t nearly as important.
***
Haymitch smiled as Katniss got out the plates, he’d always wanted those close to both him and Darcy to feel at home in their house and it pleased him to see proof that Katniss obviously did. It was especially important with her since Haymitch thought of her as a daughter.
“Don’t sell yourself short, you and your teachings might be exactly what they need. Not everybody finds talking as healing as others” Haymitch told her.
***
Considering Katniss was one of those people, she knew he was right about that. “True,” she said. “Some of us would rather take out frustrations on some innocent targets than talk about our feelings.”
She looked over her shoulder to smile at him as she said it since she had gotten a little bit better about expressing her feelings during her time in Madison Valley. Just a little though.
***
“Exactly, both ways are totally valid” Haymitch replied with a smirk, he and Katniss were very alike and he knew it was hard for her. But she was getting better. Thankfully knowing her as well as he did meant she didn’t always have to say something for him to get it.
***
Katniss always appreciated when Haymitch got her without words. Their ability to understand each other was one of the reasons that she and Peeta managed to survive the arena the first time and despite all of their ups and downs, he was one of the most important people in her life here. Especially since he’d actually stayed, unlike most of the people that she’d gotten close to.
“So, how are Darcy and Stephanie?” she asked. It was still weird that Haymitch was in a relationship and had a daughter, but she knew they both made him happy and happy was a good look for him.
***
Haymitch thought of Katniss as a daughter and hoped he’d always remain in Madison to keep an eye on her, while others had come and gone Haymitch, at least, had always been consistently here.
“They’re good, Steph is a little terror now. Running around, chatting her head off” Haymitch smiled, his pride and love obvious. Even if she did drive him crazy sometimes, he expected nothing less really. She did take after Darcy after all.
***
“I can’t believe she’s almost three,” Katniss said. It felt like just yesterday when Darcy and Haymitch announced that they were expecting and now their daughter was a real little person. “You know if you guys ever need some time, you can bring her by. I know Prim loves playing with her.”
And now that she wasn’t a fragile infant, Katniss was pretty confident she could handle a few hours in charge of Steph without causing damage.
She hoped.
***
“Neither can I” Haymitch was pretty overwhelmed sometimes when he realised he and Darcy had been parents for nearly three years. But Steph was a great kid and he was honestly so pleased they had her. Even if she was the only baby they wanted to have.
“Yeah? She’d like that, she adores you and Prim” Haymitch knew it was a fairly big thing for Katniss to offer, it showed her confidence was increasing which was good to see.
***
After everything that he’d done for her, Katniss figured it was the least she could do. And she also knew that if she felt too out of her depth, she could always call in Johanna for backup.
The tea kettle whistled then and she moved to the stove to get it while he grabbed mugs. “I’m glad I stopped by today,” she said.
***
“So am I kiddo, it’s always good to see you” Haymitch told her, ruffling her hair with a smirk as he set the mugs on the side.
